The annoyingly wealthy Jake Spivey (Jay R Ferguson) and an elusive Clyde Brattle (Alan Cumming) are the two notorious blokes whose actions have left the people of San Bonifacio with their fates up in the air. But we still do not know of their intentions, do we?

With half of the current season premiered, we are now able to comprehend the eerie happenings of the city, despite a lot of uncertainty thrown at us.

In the previous episode of USA Network’s ‘Briarpatch’, Allegra Dill (Rosario Dawson) learns that her sister’s death was the result of “something big that she was on to”, and the pursuit of which leads the former to a slaughterhouse, secretly sheltering immigrants who couldn’t successfully enter the US.

The episode, however, ended with another cliffhanger, teasing us Lalo’s (David Zaldivar) involvement either in Jake or Clyde’s business, or maybe one of his own.

Although the cop’s true intentions are unknown, we could still understand his interest in saving the people of his kind, considering he’s a Mexican himself who knows the border quite well for a patrolling officer.

Now what remains to be seen is Jake and Clyde’s intentions with the slaughterhouse.

In the last episode, it was revealed that Jake’s father succumbed to the violence that took place in the slaughterhouse, owing to his criminal past.

It could be that Jake is sheltering the immigrants only as an act of kindness, as his own father took his last breath in the same slaughterhouse. Or, he is involved in human trafficking with Lola, and together are using the destitute for their dirty business.

That doesn’t mean we could overlook Clyde’s intentions. He is well-aware of everything that goes on inside the god-forbidden place at night. That’s also one of the reasons why he chose to leave Allegra there and let her witness an army of drones the slaughterhouse shelters.

But, only the upcoming episodes can tell us if Clyde is benefitting from it in any way. However, what we could rather look forward to is the ultimate face-off between Clyde and Jake as their plans for taking down each other are in full swing and they wouldn’t leave any stone unturned to wipe each other’s existence off.

‘Briarpatch’ airs on Mondays on USA Network.
