Andy Greenwald's latest mystery-thriller 'Briarpatch' premiered on USA Network on February 6. The first episode titled 'First Time in Saint Disgrace' successfully delivers everything its compelling trailer promised, and much more.

Rosario Dawson essays Allegra Dill, who returns to her hometown San Bonifacio after the bombing death of her sister, who served as a police chief. During her accidental reunion with one of her schoolmates, Dill learns that her dead sister has stated her as the sole beneficiary of her $1.7 million worth insurance.

The well-planned bombing of the car also suggests that the blow-up was put together by an out-of-state talent with immense wealth.

Just halfway through the episode, Dill goes around asking nearly everybody she meets who her sister's killer was. This introduces small characters who may not appear later in the series.

However, what stands out in the pilot episode of 'Briarpatch' is the work of a noir story that most articulately showcases abstract scenes that are sure to win the admiration of art lovers.

Be it for Dill entering a city swamped with zoo animals on the loose or the unattended tray at the hotel room doorstep which consists of half-eaten food, there is no dearth of mind-boggling elements.

'Briarpatch' effortlessly goes from being a dark mystery to lighthearted comedy, without compromising its plot much.

'First Time in Saint Disgrace' also simultaneously deals with another story arc — Dill is asked to interrogate one of her old flings Jake Spivey (Jay R Ferguson), for the senate sub-committee.

While questioning Jake, his rags to riches story unearths a few more details about the crippling crimes in the city, which stretches Dill's goal beyond tracking down her sister's killer.

A few moments before Episode 1 concludes, 'Briarpatch' baffles us with yet another car bombing, which leaves Dill broken beyond repair. She is now determined to not only bring justice to her sister but also put an end to the persistent crime in her hometown.

'Briarpatch' airs on USA Network on Thursdays.
