Fake photo of Greta Thunberg eating lunch in front of poor children sparks outrage after it's shared by Brazilian president's son

Brazilian president Jair Bolsanaro's son, Eduardo Bolsonaro, has come under fire for posting an edited version of a photo of Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, who is currently in Montreal, Canada, campaigning for her cause.

The tweet that Bolsonaro shared showed the 16-year-old activist, who recently urged the governments of the world to fight climate change at the United Nations, enjoying her food in a train while hungry-looking children seemed to be staring at her while she ate.

The photo, which is fake, received severe backlash from Twitter users as well as Brazilian Senator Eliziane Gama. Senator Gama is a part of the Foreign Relations commission that makes the decisions about Bolsonaro's future as Brazil's ambassador to the United Nations.

She said that while such a tweet was unacceptable, it was much worse because it came from a public representative. Bolsonaro is a Brazilian federal deputy.

She said, condemning the post, "Fake news today is an evil which must be combated in every democratic society in the world. It’s something that we do not accept, and it is accepted even less when it is done by a public representative," she said in a statement.

"It's lamentable, and I think the deputy needs to retract it, make an apology to the 16-year-old and to both the Brazilian and international society."

The original unedited photo had been posted by Thunberg on her social media with the caption, "Lunch in Denmark."

In his post, the president's son said, "You stole my childhood, said the girl financed by George Soros' Open Society," referring to Thunberg's UN speech that caught the attention of millions of people all over the world.

Bolsonaro implied that she has taken money from Soros, a Hungarian-American billionaire who many right-wing conspiracy theorists believe is the man behind some of the powerful liberal groups in the world.

However, there have been no reports connecting Soros and Thunberg that have proof that he did indeed finance her. Thunberg has been the center of a backlash from right-wing supporters and has been repeatedly being trolled on Twitter for her climate change protest.
