Just as fans were gearing up for the long-awaited Blackpink comeback, news about Jennie making her solo debut seems to have taken all of Blinks' (fans of Blackpink's) attention. Blackpink members are now filming the music video for their upcoming August comeback that fans are surely looking forward to but the internet is dazzled by Jennie's appearance in the teaser for the upcoming HBO original show, 'The Idol'. On July 17, the trailer for the 2022 HBO original show 'The Idol' dropped where fans noticed idol Jennie turn into an actor. But just like every other thing K-pop idols do is carefully scrutinized by fans, the teaser was also looked at very carefully, where the idol was found wearing cornrows.

Now, fans of Jennie are calling her out for cultural appropriation for the second time. The trailer for HBO's original show, 'The Idol' featured Blackpink's Jennie as well as American singer Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) in the lead role with actor Johnny Depp's daughter, Lily-Rose Depp. Fans were also able to spot singer Troye Sivan in the trailer of the show directed and co-produced by Sam Levinson, who directed HBO's 'Euphoria'. According to HBO, the six-episode drama is “set against the backdrop of the music industry and centers on a self-help guru and leader of a modern-day cult who develops a complicated relationship with an up-and-coming pop idol.”

Blackpink's Jennie criticized for wearing cornrows

Just with the release of a 30-second teaser, Blackpink's Jennie is already drawing a lot of negative attention. Fans are slamming Jennie for appropriating the Black culture, as she sports cornrows despite having been raised in New Zealand. In a blink-and-miss clip from the teaser of the upcoming show, Jennie can be spotted with a group of other actors from the show as she seems to be following a dance routine as part of an idol group. The clip shows Jennie in chunky cornrows and it is not sitting well with many fans of K-pop.

This is not the first time when Jennie was called out for appropriating a culture that isn't her own when she was found mocking the Indian/Desi culture back in 2019 as she was spotted mocking the Indian Bharatnatyam dance form in a behind-the-scenes video for the Blackpink song, 'Kill This Love'. Back then, Jennie was also called out for wearing a maangtika as other members of Blackpink were mocked for appropriating the Indian culture on multiple occasions. Before Jennie, Lisa was also embroiled in a cultural appropriation controversy, when she sported boxed braids for the performance video of her 2021 solo debut b-side single, 'Money'.

'Girl it's 2022 and we still doing this?'

Over the years, many K-pop idols have been called out for not being respectful of the different cultures that exist and now as K-pop has gone global, fans are unhappy with Jennie for not having been responsible enough before she appeared wearing the hairstyle. One fan said, "Not jennie doing ca by wearing cornrows in the idol ... blackpink will really never learn." Another fan said, "Jennie girl why do u have cornrows in ur hair?? They look tight too! Like girl it’s 2022 and we still doing this??" One more fan said, "Jennie wearing cornrows in big ole 2022 lol imagine how tired we are." One fan said, "Blackpink jennie wearing cornrows (again), a repeating offender!"

One fan defended, "So some ppl dragging jennie for wearing "cornrows" (which the stylist gave her since she's portraying a role). Im not in the position to say that it is offensive or not since im not a black person but it is not appropriate to use cultural appropriation as a weapon for defending the artist against its fans who also use cultural appropriation to defend their faves." But one fan mocked, "The ppl saying “Jennie looks so good” via seeing her in cornrows is the most racist thing u can do why are u worrying about how it looks more than the fact it’s wrong nothing wrong with saying Jennie looks good but u know it’s cultural appropriation yet u decide to hype it up."

One fan called out, "But when y'all do s**t like this it's painfully obvious you don't care about the issue at hand you just want to deflect from the fact that jennie willingly wore cornrows. it's not gonna work." One more fan slammed, "Y’all are stupid.. stop trying to defend that GROWN ass woman, jennie is old enough to know not to wear cornrows, mf seen her members getting called out for it and she still decided to wear them, and apparently she said she LOVED them?!" Another fan wondered, "I can't believe this...fans told one of the members about ca and cultural hair TO THEIR FACE and Jennie is now sporting cornrows? HOW? WHY? This is just sad. And don't try to speak over the ones who will be rightfully offended btw."
