Bjorg Lambrecht, the Belgian cyclist died after crashing at the Tour of Poland. He was 22.  His team, Lotto Soudal announced on Monday (August 5) that Lambrecht had fallen during stage 3 of the race and was rushed to the hospital, where he died.

The team confirmed, "The biggest tragedy possible that could happen to the family, friends and teammates of Bjorg has happened … Rest in peace Bjorg," according to The Guardian. The cyclist had re-signed with Lotto Soudal for two more years in June.

Early reports said the Belgian crashed into a concrete culvert and no other rider was reportedly involved. According to Cyclingnews, race doctor Ryszard Wisniewski said, "We don't know why he fell, it was on a totally flat road."

"We tried to give a heart massage just afterward, then we called for a helicopter but his condition was so serious it wasn't able to transport him.," he added. "So we did more reanimation there where he was and then took him to the hospital by ambulance. More reanimation was done on the way to the hospital, but he died during the operation there in the hospital."

Race director, Czeslaw Lang confirmed the death in a short speech from the winner's podium - where all celebrations were reportedly canceled. Lambrecht had a series of good finishes during the one-day classics in the springs.

He was also named the most promising youngster in June’s 'Critérium du Dauphiné', a traditional preparatory event for the world-renowned Tour de France. To add to his list of achievements, the 22-year-old had won the U23 Liège-Bastogne-Liège and placed second in the Tour de l'Avenir, Giro Ciclistico Della Valle d'Aosta Mont Blanc, Tour de Savoie Mont Blanc and Ronde de l'Isard in 2017.  He won the silver medal in the U23 road race at the World Championships last year.
