'Big Little Lies' season 2 trailer introduces Meryl Streep as Mary Louise Wright as she digs for the truth

The first season ended with the five women telling the police they had an argument with Perry and that he had fallen down the stairs accidentally. In reality, Perry had attacked Celeste for wanting to leave and when he refused to stop, Bonnie pushed him down the stairs leading to his death.

The 'Big Little Lies' season 2 trailer dropped Friday and it took us back to Monterey, California, where our favorite characters are dealing with the repercussions of all the lies that were spun in the first season of the show.

Madeline Martha Mackenzie (Reese Witherspoon), Celeste Wright (Nicole Kidman), Jane Chapman (Shailene Woodley), Bonnie Carlson (Zoë Kravitz) and Renata Klein (Laura Dern) are the Monterey Five. The mothers of first-graders at a public school in Monterey met each other and made connections in the first season.

In the second season, the kids are going to second grade and the mothers together have to deal with the aftermath of Perry Wright, Celeste's husband's death. This includes Perry's mother Mary Louise Wright played by Meryl Streep, who has come to town.

The first season ended with the five women telling the police they had an argument with Perry and that he had fallen down the stairs accidentally. In reality, Perry had attacked Celeste for wanting to leave and when he refused to stop, Bonnie pushed him down the stairs leading to his death.

While they did tell the police that it was an accident, their conscience doesn't seem to agree. Each of them seems to struggle with what really happened that night and as Madeline says in the trailer, "I can see the damage done and it’s eroding every single one of us."

Sure, they are trying to keep everything normal and attend PTA meetings at their kids' school, but they also realize that things are not as they seem. In one scene, Madeline says, "People seem to think that I am unhinged," and her husband Ed Mackenzie (Adam Scott) says "Pretty much."

Added to the promising star cast, this season will see Streep play the role of dead Perry's mother Mary Louise Wright who knows something is off about the whole situation. In a revealing moment, she tells her daughter-in-law Celeste, "You learned of his infidelity just 10 seconds before he died. Oooh, you left that out too," indicating she knows more than she lets on.

The official synopsis of the season according to HBO is, "The second season of this subversive, darkly comedic drama will explore the malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and the vicious ferocity of sound parenting. Relationships will fray, loyalties will erode…the potential for emotional and bodily injury shall loom."

Based on a novel by Liane Moriarty of the same name, season 2 will premiere June 9 at 9 pm.
