'Big Little Lies' season 2 will reveal how Reese Witherspoon's Madeline deals with husband Ed while conducting an affair with Joseph
'Big Little Lies' the breakout show of 2017 starring Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Zoe Kravitz, and Shailene Woodley in lead roles dubbed as the Monterey Five, is back for season 2.
It will premiere on June 9. The show will return where it left off, which is when Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgård) dies after falling down a flight of stairs. The five women who are taken in for an interrogation, following the death reveal that it was accidental but in truth, Perry was pushed down by Bonnie (Kravitz) when he attacked his wife Celeste (Kidman). Now, in season 2, the series will showcase how relationships will evolve in the face of the lie that they have said.
And this is not the only lie in the world of 'Big Little Lies'.
Madeline (Witherspoon) who is married to Ed Mackenzie (Adam Scott) is having an affair with her theatre collaborator Joseph Bachman (Santiago Cabrera). In the first season, the two were together represented by Celeste in a case about their controversial play 'Avenue Q'.
It was revealed through a flashback that the two had had an affair a year ago, and with a kiss, the affair is reignited. Ed is unaware about what Madeline is up to and the trailer of season 2 sees Madeline caught in the web of lies. We see montages of her and Ed's wedding moments and we also see Madeline share a passionate kiss with Joseph backstage.
In season 1, it was clear that Joseph's wife Tori Bachman (Sarah Sokolovic) knew about her husband's affair. In fact, while speaking of the same, Madeline and Joseph even meet with an accident.
This leads to Joseph being hospitalized and during the opening night of 'Avenue Q', Tori also confronts Madeline about the truth. Madeline also feels guilty at the end of the season, when everyone is out for Trivia night. She gets drunk and runs away during Ed's singing performance when she realizes that he loves her more than she does him. This realization indicates two things - firstly, Madeline may mend her ways and put an end to the affair and secondly, she might just continue with it because she knows that she can never give Ed as much as he does for her.
From the trailer of the second season, it looks like Madeline's character takes the latter route at if we were to go by the reactions of the characters, it looks like Ed might have caught her in the act.
It certainly seems like he learns some form of truth about his wife, but we will have to wait to see if this has to do with Perry's death or with her affair.
Since Tori's character is recurring in season 2 and not just a guest appearance anymore, anything is possible.
