Will Detective Adrienne Quinlan expose Monterey Five's 'Big Little Lies' in season 2?

The trailer of 'Big Little Lies' season 2 revealed that Madeline, Celeste, Jane, Bonnie and Renata may not be off the hook for Perry's death after all. Here's why!

'Big Little Lies' season 2 is all set to take us back to the night that Celeste Wright's (Nicole Kidman) husband, Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgard) died. It was the trivia night that changed everything for Madeline Mackenzie (Reese Witherspoon), Renata Klein (Laura Dern), Bonnie Carlson (Zoe Kravitz), Jane Chapman (Shailene Woodley), and Celeste - the Monterey Five.

The truth about what exactly happened that fateful night is something only the five women know and have since tried to sweep under the rug in the name of an accident. But will their lies be buried forever? There is also more to each of them than meets the eye as they all have a secret they want to keep hidden.

For instance, the fact that Celeste wanted to leave her husband the day after trivia night was not something everyone knew. Madeline's affair with theater coordinator Joseph Bachman (Santiago Cabrera) is not something she wants the world to know and the biggest of all, Jane's history with Perry, his alias Saxon Banks and how he abused her is not for the world to know.

Bonnie was the one who pushed Perry down the stairs for attacking Celeste and these are secrets each of them are not ready to spill. There is, however, someone who finds these women's accounts of the night fishy and that is detective Adrienne Quinlan.

We met her in the finale episode of the first season as she watched the five women relax with their children after wrapping up interviews with the police regarding Perry's death. In season 2, she seems to be the driving force behind the unraveling of the five women.

In Madeline's words as spoken in the trailer, "This detective is trying to put the pressure on us so that one of us breaks." And we also see Detective Quinlan watching them as she tries to wait for cracks to appear in at least one of their stories. In a visual metaphor, she snaps shut a handheld watch to probably indicate time's up and these women have to come clean about what they did to Perry.

While it is self-defense, trying to cover it up as an accident will not work in their favor. Celeste maybe a talented lawyer, but at the moment she is a wreak ready to break down any moment if not for her therapist Dr. Amanda Reisman (Robin Weigert).

'Big Little Lies' season 2 premiere date is yet to be announced (HBO)

Mary Louise Wright (Meryl Streep), Celeste's mother-in-law might be the key to getting Celeste, if not all them, to confess the truth about that night. She definitely knows Celeste knows more than she lets on and that the couple's relationship was on the rocks. Will Mary Lousie team up with the detective to find the answers she so desperately needs?

We will have to wait for the premiere of the second season of 'Big Little Lies', which will be aired on HBO June 9.
