'Big Brother' fans outraged over Julie Chen's show of support for Les Moonves: 'Messy and insulting'
Indeed subtle, but a firm message from the 48-year-old TV show host, who has been visibly absent on screen, as the entire drama over Moonves' ousting from CBS played out.
Steering clear of directly addressing the long-drawn and spiraling controversy surrounding former CBS chief and husband Les Moonves, 'Big Brother' host Julie Chen sent a subtle show of support as she signed off on Thursday night. Chen, who returned to her hosting duties after a brief hiatus, looked into the cameras in the concluding moments and said, "I’m Julie Chen Moonves. Goodnight.”
Indeed subtle, but a firm message from the 48-year-old TV show host, who has been visibly absent on screen in the last few days, as the entire drama over Moonves' ousting from CBS played out in the public eye. The 68-year-old former CEO and chairman of the network has been accused of sexual harassment by multiple accusers. However, his exit last Sunday came on the heels of a fresh New Yorker story that recounted the experiences of at least six women claiming they were harassed and even forced into oral sex.
While Chen has completely avoided discussing the topic of the sexual misconduct allegations against her husband on air, her message of solidarity made her stance on the issue pretty evident - a move that seemed to have not gone down well with the viewers of 'Big Brother', who have since taken to social media to express their shock and anger.
"Now THAT was a statement... “From outside the Big Brother House, I’m Julie Chen Moonves.” I’ve NEVER heard her say “Moonves” for anything. Did anyone else catch that?" a Twitter user shared.
As a second user chimed in, writing, "'I’m Julie Chen Moonves. Goodnight.' Wow, Julie casts shade on CBS with that simple line. #BB20"
"Tonight, Julie Chen signed off Big Brother as Julie Chen Moonves, firmly standing w/her husband, a serial sexual assaulter who ruined careers. She is complicit. Because of this, I will no longer put any of my clients on @TheTalkCBS. Fellow publicists, I hope you stand with me," publicist and Emmy winner Danny Deraney wrote.
"'Julie Chen Moonves' can pack her things and go as far as I am concerned. That was like saying, 'I stand by my husband and all his victims can eat shit,'" added someone else.
There was some mixed reaction as well. Some fans were of opinion that it is pointless to drag Chen in her husband's matter.
"#BB20 fans, Julie Chen did nothing wrong at all. Wether or not the allegations about her husband are true or not, there is no need to consistently bash her for doing nothing wrong, if he did do that, she cannot control his actions. Big brother would not be the same without her," read the tweet.
Added another: "And by saying the words "I'm Julie Chen-Moonves", @JulieChen just showed herself to be a bigger man than anyone else in the house."
