The new administration of President Joe Biden has decided to give coronavirus vaccinations to suspected terrorists at Guantánamo Bay first and then to the general public. A report by the New York Times stated that the Pentagon will provide the vaccine of the Covid-19 to the inmates of the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba as soon as next week. Fox News reported it on Thursday, January 28, after getting information from defense officials with knowledge of the decision.

Clayton Trivett Jr., a federal prosecutor trying the case against five inmates alleged to have been responsible for the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, said to defense lawyers that "an official in the Pentagon just signed a memo approving the delivery of the COVID-19 vaccine to the detainee population in Guantanamo”. The report also stated that at least 40 inmates will get vaccines "on a voluntary basis", before adding that because of the lack of vaccinations, war crimes hearings at the base’s Camp Justice compound have been put on hold.

In 2018, former President Donald Trump signed an executive order to keep Guantanamo Bay open. In the order, Trump stated, “Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) and other authorities authorized the United States to detain certain persons who were a part of or substantially supported al-Qa’ida, the Taliban, or associated forces engaged in hostilities against the United States or its coalition partners. Today, the United States remains engaged in an armed conflict with al-Qa’ida, the Taliban, and associated forces, including with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria."

He added, “Given that some of the current detainee population represent the most difficult and dangerous cases from among those historically detained at the facility, there is significant reason for concern regarding their reengagement in hostilities should they have the opportunity. … Section 3 of Executive Order 13492 of January 22, 2009 (Review and Disposition of Individuals Detained at the Guantánamo Bay Naval Base and Closure of Detention Facilities), ordering the closure of detention facilities at U.S. Naval Station Guantánamo Bay, is hereby revoked.”

Meanwhile, the news of giving the vaccination to suspected terrorists has caused a lot of stir on the internet. “OH HELL NO!!! ‘Pentagon to offer vaccines to Guantanamo Bay prisoners | Fox News’,” one person wrote on Twitter. Another one said, “'The Pentagon says the 40 detainees at Guantánamo Bay will be given Covid-19 vaccines.' -NYT So terrorists get it before elderly, HC workers. et, al???” “Oh my goodness I just heard that they are going to vaccinate the 40 prisoners at Guantánamo Bay as soon as Monday I have friends whose Age is less than 70 and theyhavecomorbidities and they can’t get the vaccine what the Hades,” the third user added.

A fourth user noted, “As far as I'm concerned the a****** detainees at Guantanamo Bay should not get the Trump vaccine for the covid-19. In fact they should be executed for their crimes.” The fifth one tweeted, “Ok great JB hurry up and get those vaccines to Guantánamo Bay prison so the guy who planned 911 can get it before 99 percent of Americans.”
