Bette Midler labels Trump ‘cancer on our country’ days after mocking Melania’s accent and ‘illegal alien’ jibe

Singer-songwriter Bette Midler, on Friday, September 4, took another swipe at President Donald Trump and called him a "cancer on our country" after it was reported that the president had referred to fallen US soldiers as "suckers" and "losers." Midler's criticism of Trump came just weeks after she was branded a "racist" for mocking First Lady Melania Trump's accent during the Republican National Convention (RNC).

Midler, in a series of tweets on Friday, slammed Trump, citing an article from The Atlantic which claimed that the president made disparaging comments about the soldiers who had died in World War I and II. The 74-year-old singer wrote: "Donnie, we have watched helplessly for YEARS, as you’ve degraded honorable people, smeared them, slandered them, viciously and constantly ripping their sacrifice to our country to shreds, ruining countless lives in the process. You are a cancer on our country and Constitution."

She then retweeted a series of tweets from others criticizing Trump for denying The Atlantic report, and then took a swipe at the Republican's response to the coronavirus crisis in the country. She wrote: "Trump called our military dead 'losers' & 'suckers' & didn't want wounded vets in his military parade because 'nobody wants to see that.'"

"He doesn't give a f**k that 186,000 Americans have died of Covid-19. He's a psychopath & the world's luckiest serial killer," Midler added. The report by The Atlantic, published on Thursday, September 3, claimed that Trump canceled a trip to Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris in 2018 after he referring to deceased soldiers as "losers." The report added that the president was also worried about getting his hair wet in the rain.

"Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers," the president allegedly told his senior staff members in 2018 on the morning of the visit. Trump, according to the outlet, also called over 1,800 marines who were killed at Belleau Wood, a World War I battle between German and American troops, "suckers."

Shortly after widespread outrage over the reports, Trump denied the allegations. However, many people on social media drew comparisons to 2015 comments he had made against late Senator John McCain, who fought in the Vietnam War. Trump infamously had said during a campaign event that McCain was "not a war hero." He had added: "I like people that weren't captured." He, however, walked back on his comments the same day, writing: "Captured or not, all our soldiers are heroes!" Senator McCain, who was battling brain cancer, passed away in 2018.

Trump, on Thursday, September 3, had attempted to clear his name and had denied disrespecting McCain. Trump wrote on Twitter: "I was never a big fan of John McCain, disagreed with him on many things including ridiculous endless wars and the lack of success he had in dealing with the VA and our great Vets, but the lowering of our Nations American Flags, and the first class funeral he was given by our country, had to be approved by me, as President, & I did so without hesitation or complaint. Quite the contrary, I felt it was well deserved."
