Garth Brooks wears 'Sanders' jersey on stage, gets trolled after fans mix up Barry Sanders with Bernie Sanders
Country music star Garth Brooks confused millions of fans on social media after posting a picture of himself in a 'Sanders' jersey from his packed show in Detroit on February 22.
In a tribute to one of his heroes, 'The Thunder Rolls' hitmaker wore the No. 20 jersey of former Detroit Lions running back and NFL Hall of Famer Barry Sanders. However, quite a few of his followers on Instagram assumed he was wearing it in support of 2020 presidential hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt), Fox News reports.
"Good grief," one user wrote. "Can’t you just do what you get paid to do ???? Why why why does it have to involve politics !!! So sad. We don’t pay good money for anything other than to watch you perform. 😡Thought you were different."
"Lost some respect w that jersey," another added.
"If this is for Bernie Sanders, I'm done with you," a third user commented. "I thought you were a true American that loves Our Country?"
While it is unclear if Brooks' critics weren't aware of the football legend, some of his fans on Instagram took it upon themselves to correct the misguided attacks.
"I’m going out on a limb here... he’s a football fan and it’s a Barry Sanders jersey. CRAZY I know," one explained.
The legendary running back was honored during the concert, according to The Blaze.
"Oh Lord help me. Barry Sanders! Barry Sanders! Detroit Lions! Football Jersey! Google! Use it!" one user insisted.
While it is well known that Brooks is a registered Republican, some of his fans who support Bernie were happy to see him sport the misunderstood jersey.
"Love the Sanders jersey! Feel the Bern!," one Bernie supporter wrote on Twitter.
"Welp. Looks like @garthbrooks just became my favorite country singer! #FeelTheBern2020," another added.
But the best comments came after the air was cleared on Brooks' post, with some having fun with the drama that ensued.
"SANDERS? FOR REAL? How much did KFC pay you to wear this?" one wrote. "Keep fast food out of your music. KFC wants chicken for all. Show me a country that has succeeded with a chicken for all policy. #popeyes2020"
