Ben Shapiro slammed for likening Covid-19 to obesity
Conservative pundit Ben Shapiro was slammed on Monday, August 23, after he reacted to the news of 75 south Florida doctors staging a symbolic walkout to protest against the fact that they were being forced to treat unvaccinated Covid-19 patients.
The group of doctors briefly walked out of their shifts to display their frustration and fatigue at the surging amount of misinformation that has led to vaccine hesitancy in the state. "It’s incredibly frustrating because we know the vaccines are safe and effective and it’s people that go out and talk against them that really go against physicians and medicine and science. It’s not the message we want to get across to people," JT Snarkski, one of the doctors who participated in the walkout, told MSNBC. "Vaccines are safe and we need to get our communities vaccinated."

According to data from the Mayo Clinic, only 51% of Florida residents are fully vaccinated. The refusal to get vaccinated had led to 86% of the state’s hospital beds becoming full, due to the rising number of Delta variant cases. Tweeting the MSNBC clip, Shapiro chose to compare the situation with obesity, which is prevalent in the US. "If this is the new standard — that failure to take measures to alleviate your own health problems are punishable by doctors refusing treatment — the extension of this logic to obesity will certainly be something," he wrote.

'Isn't your wife a doctor?'
His reaction was immediately slammed by people who pointed out the glaring flaws in Shapiro's logic — obesity was not a communicable disease and there was no vaccine that can make one immune to it. "Conservatives realize that communicable diseases are not like obesity or car accidents challenge," one of them said while another noted, "*If* obesity was contagious, rapidly overwhelming our intensive care capabilities, often fatal within days of acquiring, *and* the risks of transmission, hospitalization, and death could be dramatically reduced with a free shot, then yes, we would mandate that too. But it's not." A third stated, "idk if they taught you this at harvard, but obesity is not a contagious disease, nor is there a simple vaccine for obesity. isn't your wife a doctor?"
"This flex where anti-vaxxers are trying to compare obesity to the choice to be unvaccinated is so shameful and harmful. Being obese is not contagious. Nor does it endanger the lives of others. Take your fat phobia elsewhere ya’ lunatics," the next quipped. One more remarked, "Obesity isn't communicable, dummy. If physical traits were communicable, no one would hang out with Ben Shapiro out of fear of catching weasel face." Another commented, "This is a very good point, Benjamin. I went to the ER at my local hospital last week and it was PACKED with the obese folks just obesing. I got out quick, though, lest I caught it myself. We know how contagious that new strain of obesity is."
A commenter tweeted, "Is there a free vaccine for obesity? For drug addiction? For mental illness? For being a hack stooge like you?" One more said, "Imagine thinking obesity is simply because people just eat bad and not due to overblown capitalism and lack of oversight on the industries in the pocket of politicians." Another chimed in, with, "I don’t think healthcare workers are at risk of contracting obesity from the obese patients they treat." One user wrote, "Call me when obesity, heart disease and cancer are communicable diseases." A person reacted with, "What a crushingly stupid comparison. Obesity is not communicable. However, Ben Shapiro has demonstrated time and time again that stupidity DEFINITELY is." One more wrote, "Ben Shapiro is 5'6" and weighs 98 pounds, and he's taking shots at people based on their appearance, and their 'obesity'?"
