EXCLUSIVE | Jean-Luc breaks down 'Below Deck' lead deckhand Gary King's leadership, says 'lacks team camaraderie'
Jean-Luc Cerza Lanaux is easily the chill guy of yachting. He has a relaxed body language but at the same time never shies away from work. He takes orders from his superiors but also has his way of getting the job done, which almost always works. For a newbie, he's quite efficient but lead deckhand Gary King's nitpicking may have displeased him a little.
In an interview with MEAWW, Jean-Luc appreciated Gary's knowledge of sailing but questioned his leadership. "What I think Gary lacks is team camaraderie. He’s very used to doing everything himself and the littlest thing that he doesn’t like that’s deemed acceptable by other people isn’t acceptable by his standards."
A few episodes ago on 'Below Deck Sailing Yacht', Gary and Jean-Luc got into a brief altercation about a job the youngster was doing differently. While Gary could have taken a different approach to managing the situation but from what it appears he has a short fuse with his teammate. "The mentorship that he brings to the table is very rough and rigid and not understanding," Jean-Luc commented.
Surprisingly, the two butt heads often given they were roommates at one point in time. Even though there has never been a major feud but the tension between them is palpable, which possibly left to a cabin swap. Jean-Luc and Captain Glenn Shephard are roommates now.
In his interview, Jean-Luc continued about Gary and how his "love triangle" panned out on Parsifal III. "I think the love triangle between Gary and some of the girls on board was a bit much and definitely created most of the drama on board Parsifal lll throughout the whole season," he said and added that Gary "is a grown man who made the decisions that he made knowing what the possible outcome and the emotional tornado that was being created by all parties involved."
The yachtie concluded that the three-way relationship went too far and it shouldn't have gone there. "I think everyone in that triangle looking back on it now knows that it shouldn’t have gone as far as it did."
