'Batwoman' actor Brendon Zub says we’ve only seen ‘hints of Alice and Dodgson’s plans for Gotham’, more backstory and heartbreak to come
'Batwoman' actor Brendon Zub played the role of Alice's boyfriend Chuck Dodgson who was captured by Batwoman in the first few episodes and held captive. He worked with Alice but was also employed by Jacob Kane at the Crows Security and this is something we learned in the fourth episode of the show.
In this exclusive interview with MEA WorldWide (MEAWW), Zub revealed what it was like to play his character and teased more "tension, heartbreak, confusion, chaos and convoluted battles" ahead in the show.
Speaking of his character siding with Alice and working with Rachel Skarsten, Zub said, "It was a treat. She’s so much fun to work with and such a dynamic actress that brings so much life to Alice. So much of the show’s success hinges on her ability to sell this character and be that yin to Batwoman’s yang. And she plays the archnemesis beautifully. She balances Alice’s craziness, playfulness and anger so well that you can’t help but love the villain. I can’t think of anyone else to play that role."
Zub said the best thing about his character Chuck was the fact that there were more layers to him and added he would have preferred it if the truth about Chuck was revealed much later in the show.
He said, "I like that there’s a lot of layers to (Chuck) Dodgson. He’s quickly revealed to be a double agent and traitor to the Crows and Alice’s lover no less. This opens up a lot of questions about his back story and how that all came to be with a lot of his motivations and plans still to be revealed. I never really struggled to come to terms with anything...but I guess I had hoped Dodgson would have been found out to be a traitor a little later in the season so as to torture the audience a bit more with them only knowing his true identity. But writers know best and I like how they’ve kept him busy so far."
While Zub couldn't reveal much about the upcoming episodes or the 'Crisis on Infinite Earths' event he said, "I think there will be a lot more tension, heartbreak, confusion, chaos, and convoluted battles ahead. Episode 2 definitely hints at it as well with Dodgson’s line to Alice of 'let chaos reign' during the tea party scene. And in other episodes, he’s shown to be a bit of an errand boy creating havoc for the Crows. I think that stuff is to be expected as he is Alice’s boyfriend and that love influence is strong. But I believe viewers are only just beginning to see hints of Alice’s and Dodgson’s plans for Gotham. They’re hiding a few tricks up their sleeve with more of their relationship, backstory and true motivations revealed later on in the season."
Finally, speaking about preparing for the role, Zub said, "Becoming a bit more familiar with the comics helped. I used to be into comics as a teenager but needed some updating as to who's who. Camrus (Johnson) who plays Luke Fox on the show has a lot of comics and got me caught up on the goings-on in the DC universe."
He also added, "I’m very excited to be a part of this show. To have a series set in Gotham feels extra special. It definitely brings out strong feelings of nostalgia working on sets like the Batcave and Wayne tower with all the remnants of Batman about. It also helps that we have such a great cast attached to this show."
The next episode of 'Batwoman' will air Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
