Barron Trump is the first presidential son to call White House home since JFK's son John Jr in 1963
President Donald Trump's youngest child Barron is the First Boy to live in the White House since John F Kennedy's presidency.
The 14-year-old is the only child of First Lady Melania Trump, who is the President's third wife.
Trump's predecessors Barack Obama, George W Bush, and Bill Clinton, were fathers only to girls, as were Lyndon B Johnson and Richard Nixon who came after JFK.
In between, presidents Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and George HW Bush had sons, but they were all adults who chose to live outside the White House.
Since Kennedy's son John Jr., who lived in the White House until 1963, Barron is the first son of a president to call it home, Express reports.
That said, Barron and his mother Melania did not move to the White House immediately after Trump's election. They stayed behind in New York so Barron could finish his school year before the mother-son duo moved to Washington DC in the summer.
Members of the First Family have their quarters on the second and third floors of the White House.
According to Edward Lengel, the chief historian of the White House Historical Association, both parents and children are free to decorate their own spaces as they like.
The inhabitants can also choose to keep their quarters private or keep their doors open. NYT correspondent Jodi Kanter told Chicago Magazine in 2012 how the Bushes "were very open" to the media, with Laura Bush inviting several documentary filmmakers in. On the other hand, the Obamas told reporters “this is Sasha’s and Malia’s home” and were, in contrast, much more private.
According to Town & Country magazine, the White House has a jogging track, a cinema, a basketball court, a swimming pool, bowling alley, as well as a billiard room.
Having said that, Barron's White House quarters may still be a step down from his palatial home in Trump Tower, New York City. There, the teenager had an entire floor to himself, which Melania once famously called "Barron's living room."
Since time immemorial, White House children tended to realize that the highest-level security arrangement made it difficult to have privacy. However, some of them managed to have their fun within the White House walls anyway.
Jimmy Carter's daughter Amy had a treehouse for her built in the White House grounds, while Bill Clinton's daughter Chelsea had a secluded breakfast nook for herself, according to Lengel.
Furthermore, the White House also has a full kitchen staff ready to cook anything upon the family's request.
According to some accounts, President Trump apparently stacked the White House kitchen with Lays crisps and Coca Cola when he first moved in.
While Barron may have stocked up on his favorite things himself, he is not as involved in public life as his older half-siblings Ivanka, Donald Jr, Eric, and Tiffany — primarily because of his age.
The 14-year-old is usually only pictured when he's stepping on or off the Air Force One while traveling to and from Trump's Florida home and resort Mar-a-Lago.
Nonetheless, he has participated in some White House events such as the Easter Egg Roll in the company of his younger nieces and nephews.
