'Backstreet Rookie' Episode 10: Dae-hyun shocked by Yeon-joo's lies after breakup, Saet-byul helps him heal
From the beginning of 'Backstreet Rookie', it was clear that Yeon-joo (Han Sun-hwa) was from a rich family, while Dae-hyun (Ji Chang-wook) belonged to a middle-class home. However, the extent of differences between the two and their families was highlighted in episode 10. First Dae-hyun's heart gets broken by Yeon-joo who has nothing to tell him but that he should meet someone who suits him. Dae-hyun is not sure what she means initially, however, it isn't too long before he learns the complete truth about Yeon-joo and the fact that she was a two-faced liar who always expected the best from Dae-hyun in their relationship while not contributing to it herself.
We learn that Yeon-joo is the daughter of the second-biggest stakeholder of the company that she works at and right after she breaks up with Dae-hyun, she gets appointed as a director. This shocks everyone in the office because she had hidden her connection to the company all this while from her colleagues and Dae-hyun. Two of her colleagues visit Dae-hyun and tell him about this development and it is this more than anything that hurts Dae-hyun. He was always told that there should be no lies between them. However, it turns out that Yeon-joo had lied from the very beginning until the very end.
So he decides to confront her and even at this time, Yeon-joo tries to pin the blame on him for the failure of their relationship. While he tries to ask her about all the lies, she instead tries to divert all of his attention to the fact that he had lied about Saet-byul (Kim Yoo-jung). To top this off, at that unfortunate moment, Dae-hyun sees his father working as the driver for Yeon-joo's mother and that hurts Dae-hyun more than anything at this point. He understands that he is not of similar standing to Yeon-joo, but he did not expect her to use his family to show him his place. For once, Yeon-joo did not play a part in this scheme and it was her mother who has orchestrated the entire affair, but the fact is that Yeon-joo did not love Dae-hyun enough to make a stand in front of her parents.
Once Dae-hyun realizes this is when he understands that his relationship with Yeon-joo has truly come to an end. So the next phase of break up begins as he begins to grieve his relationship and everything that his family had to go through because of it. He is also not aware of how his mother had signed an insurance plan with Yeon-joo's mother, and that would only go further to push him away from Yeon-joo.
While all of this transpires, Saet-byul ends up getting kicked out of Ji-wook's house by his manager without him being aware of it. So she returns to Dae-hyun's house as she also ends up getting a call about Dae-hyun's mother worrying about her. That is when she learns about Dae-hyun's break up and she visits Dae-hyun while he is burying his sorrow in alcohol to cheer him up a little. That is also when she reveals how she has been crushing on him for 10 years now. The first time that she had met him was not when she had asked him to buy her cigarettes but much before at her father's taekwondo center. She tells him all of this when he is drunk and completely out of it. Will he remember when the haze of alcohol clears from his mind?
