In 2009, James Cameron stunned the world with one of the most extraordinary movies ever and enthralled audiences with spectacular visuals and amazing storylines. Yes, we are talking about ‘Avatar’. The epic science fiction went on to become the highest-grossing movie of all time and earned more than $2 billion at the global box office. 13 years after its initial release, the movie has returned to the cinema halls for another run in order to make people excited for the sequel to the 2009 movie, and garnered record-breaking numbers.

Despite 13 years passing since the movie first hit theatres, audiences are still overwhelmed by the magical world of Pandora. The movie went on to earn $30.5 million worldwide in the first three days of its re-release and took the top spot at the global box office. With these figures, ‘Avatar’ takes a wide lead and continues to be the biggest movie of all time with a total tally of $2.85 billion globally, as per Forbes.

There was a lot of excitement over the re-mastered version of the sci-fi movie because it also includes a post-credit scene that features a sequence from the upcoming movie ‘The Way of Water’.

Set in 2154, ‘Avatar’ chronicles the journey of a disabled, former marine named Jake Sully who becomes a part of the Avatar program after his twin brother is killed in combat. The Resource Development Administration (RDA) has reached Pandora, a moon in the Alpha Centauri star system, to mine the valuable mineral unobtanium. Sully is successful in initiating a bond between humans and the people of Pandora, but things take a U-turn when he is forced to confess that he was a spy. An epic fight takes place between the people of Pandora and humans after the latter destroys the Hometree.

The movie opened to universal acclaim and critics as well as audiences couldn’t stop raving about the film’s mesmerizing visuals and acting. ‘Avatar’ raked in more than $77 million in its opening weekend and grossed over $241 million in the first five days of its release. It was the first movie to cross the $2 billion mark at the global box office and only ‘Avengers: Endgame’ is the only other title to reach that milestone.

Since 2009, fans have been eagerly waiting to take a trip back to Pandora and finally, they will be able to the magical land in ‘The Way of Water’. Set in 2167, thirteen years after the events of the first film, the movie chronicles the journey of the Sully family, the troubles they go through, and the lengths they go to keep each other safe. The movie was initially slated to release in 2014, but a whole new technology was needed to shoot performance capture scenes underwater. For the uninitiated, the technology hasn’t been used before in any movie or TV series.

The first teaser trailer for ‘The Way of Water’ was released in May 2022 and received a thunderous response. Fans have already labeled it the biggest movie of 2022 and they cannot wait to see the epic sci-fi film on the biggest screen possible.

'Avatar: The Way of Water' is slated to release in theatres on December 16.
