'Attack on Titan' season 4: Eren will face new challenges and a changed world in the anime's final installment
Eren Yeager may have finally realized the truth about his world in season 3 of ‘Attack on Titan’ but the young hero will have a lot more bloodshed to face when the fourth and final season comes out. When the new season drops in the fall of 2020, Eren will have to deal with the fallout of the truths he uncovered at the end of the last season.
The season 3 finale revealed that the inhabitants of Paradis Island are not, in fact, the last of humanity. Strictly speaking, they aren’t human at all but rather a race of people known as the “Subjects of Ymir.” The Titans are also revealed to be more than the monsters they are made out to be because as the Subjects of Ymir they all have the innate ability to transform into Titans.
Eren and the rest of the Survey Corps reveal this secret to their fellow islanders and this is bound to have some major repercussions in the coming season. With the myth of “Humanity Within the Walls” dispelled, the history of Paradis Island has been turned on its head and there will be some important changes to the social fabric of the walled nation. After all, nobody likes to find out that they’ve been lied to by their government.
The finale also set up the big bad for the final season: the nation of Marley. Paradis Island was known to be the only the last remaining territory of a once vast nation called Eldia. The vast empire, built on the power of the Titans, was brought crumbling down by internal conflicts and war with Marley, a nation that was once conquered by the Eldians. Eventually, Eldia’s territories were reduced to just Paradis Island, allowing Marley to take over the mainland continent across the sea.
Despite their suffering at the hands of the Titans, the Marleyans soon began using them as weapons, transforming convicted Eldians into Titans and unleashing them on Paradis Island. Which means that all the trouble that has hounded Eren and his friends throughout the series can ultimately be traced back to Marley.
In the new season, Eren's nemesis, Zeke, will continue attempting to capture Eren and claim the Coordinate Titan for Marley. Zeke already has the power of the Armored Titan, Cart Titan, and Jaw Titan, making him a formidable threat. But now, armed with their knowledge of the past and Eren’s new powers, the Survey Corps can finally take the fight to Marley and face their ancient enemies across the sea.
Season 4 of ‘Attack on Titan’ will air weekly starting in the fall of 2020.
