Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, better known as AOC, has fired back at Nancy Mace after being accused of faking to be in handcuffs. Mace took to Twitter on Wednesday, July 20, and shared a photo of the 32-year-old activist from a Tuesday protest against the overturning of Roe v Wade that showed her hands behind her back as a cop was seen holding her hand.

AOC was reportedly arrested along with Ilhan Omar near the Supreme Court. But Mace called it “performative art” as she tweeted: “Politics has become performative art. So of course @aoc fakes being in handcuffs. Performance, not policy, is the name of the game up here. 💁🏻‍♀️.” The Democrat called her out by replying, “No faking here. Putting your hands behind your back is a best practice while detained, handcuffed or not, to avoid escalating charges like resisting arrest.”

She also added: “But given how you lied about a fellow rape survivor for ‘points,’ as you put it to me, I don’t expect much else from you.” The “fellow rape survivor” comment was reportedly referring to the past incidents in the two women’s lives. AOC was reportedly raped in New York City when she was 22 or 23 years old while Mace was sexually assaulted when she was just 16.

But the 44-year-old Representative did not stop there and shared a video of AOC from the Tuesday protest while adding: “Idk. Here you are @aoc breaking your fake handcuff pose for a good fist pump and shout out to the crowd - looking ‘tough’! Good theater though… 💪🤷🏻‍♀️🥂”

Several others also accused AOC and other Democratic lawmakers of pretending to be in handcuffs. Slamming AOC, someone wrote on Twitter “Maybe you should consider an acting career instead of politics. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Oh wait…they’re the same to you.” Sharing a meme, another asked: “This you?” “Are the hair flip and grinning like a possum part of your ‘best practices’ too?” someone else quipped.

A sarcastic tweet read, “So you’re becoming an advocate for not resisting arrest? That’s fabulous news, officer involved shootings will drop significantly if you make this a national campaign.” Another tweet was “Your past statements & actions made you look foolish yesterday, AOC. I recommend putting your head down & getting work done. It appears you make everything about you & not about what you claim to care about.”

A critic of AOC tweeted, “Imagine protesting instead of using your actual power(legislating). When you can't gather support among other elected officials to change things, guess protesting is the next best thing?” “There are a lot of things going on in your district these days.  Are you planning on getting involved with any of them?  A whole lot of people are counting on you to spend your time representing their interests & current concerns, not your personal ones,” another fumed.
