'Another Life' star Greg Hovanessian fell in love with the Netflix sci-fi after reading script: 'It was unpredictable' and 'bold'

Greg Hovanessian's Beauchamp McCarry may only have appeared in Netflix's 'Another Life' in its last few episodes but the character was easily one of the best in the season.  Speaking to MEA WorldWide (MEAWW) in an exclusive interview, the young Canadian actor spoke about how he was attracted to the project because of how "bold" and "unpredictable" it was.

"I’m a huge fan of Sci-Fi," Hovanessian said. "I take a liking to intelligence in characters, the 'brains of the operations'. Beauchamp enters the story as a replacement, an underdog with big shoes to fill, which I’m particularly drawn to. Beauchamp's new presence as a higher status crew member causes all sorts of effects on characters. Competitive ebb and flows with characters are a tasty result. I found my relationship with Cas particularly interesting in how their similarities and differences clash. How the disagreements and power struggles evolve into un-admitted care for each other."

He particularly loved how the characters on the show made interesting, unpredictable choices that cause them to evolve in unexpected ways. "It’s those redemption-relationships that unexpectedly turn a corner that are fun to see unfold," he explained. "Also, as Niko’s second in command, Beauchamp has very little wiggle room for error, there are high stakes and it’s life or death. You can feel the support of Niko in that she wants Beauchamp to succeed. So there’s such a diverse flow between characters that causes conflict, redemption, interesting choices and unpredictability."

In fact, you could almost say Hovanessian was hooked the moment he read the script. He admitted to being "really excited" when he got the chance to appear on such an interesting show. "Reading the script for the first time, I found it to be quite bold," he said. "It was unpredictable. The situations that the majority of characters found themselves in were intrepid, brash, evil, courageous, desperate and the list goes on. Characters would follow their impulse desires and the plot weaves in so many interesting ways. 'Another Life' has such a vast plethora of themes. I was really excited when I booked the part."

Now that the show's first season has been released, Hovanessian has other plans in the pipeline, including a series for Hallmark's brand new streaming platform. "I’m currently shooting a series called ‘When Hope Calls’ produced by Hallmark," Hovanessian said. "Hallmark Movies Now is a brand new streaming platform and ‘When Hope Calls’ will kick it off August 30th, 2019. In this western period piece, I play the role of Chuck Steward who is a cattle rancher and Veterinarian. Chuck is the love interest of one of the female leads, Grace. This has been a great and developmental experience as this is a type of character I have never played before. Very different from Beauchamp, Chuck has got this southern twang and behavior suited to the 1916s with a different skillset and knowledge. Chuck is immersed in this 'Romeo and Juliet' type plotline in his quest for the girl all while satisfying his purpose in the town of Brookfield."

'Another Life' is currently available for streaming on Netflix. 'When Hope Calls' will be released on Hallmark Movies Now on August 30, 2019.
