So what really started it all? There is speculation according to media reports that an interview given by 'Peaky Blinders' actor Annabelle Wallis to The Hollywood Reporter is how the hoax started. Apparently some parts of the interview, when translated for a foreign media audience, ended up becoming Annabelle escaped. Is it really just a case of lost in translation? While we cannot confirm the credibility of this speculation, here is what Wallis who also starred in the original Annabelle movie as Mia, spoke of in the interview.
She spoke about working with James Wan on their second collaboration 'Malignant' and said, "I think we have something very special. I think it’s genre-bending. I think it’s so brave. It’s so original. I just haven’t read anything like it." She added, "And James Wan, we worked together on Annabelle, so he was like, ‘I wrote this part for you, Annabelle. Let’s collaborate.’ I think I’ve found in him such a wonderful collaborator, and I know that we will continue working together for years to come. I think it’s really going to be something that audiences are pretty wowed by because it’s a real passion project for him."
