NEW DELHI, INDIA: Shocking CCTV footage has emerged of a woman being dragged by a car to her death for nearly an hour on New Year's Day after the vehicle crashed into her bike and she became entangled in the axle.

Anjali Singh's body was pulled along behind the car that collided with her scooter as she was riding back home from work in the early hours of January 1. The 20-year-old events manager was reportedly dragged for around six miles following the horror crash that occurred in New Delhi, India. Disturbing CCTV footage emerged showing her body being pulled by the car that hit her. Local law enforcement revealed that the car was occupied by five men in their 20s and that they kept driving for miles.

As reported by The Indian Express, Anjali was pulled along the road for almost an hour from around 2.30 am. In the meantime, witnesses made at least five emergency calls to the police. "It was horrible," an eyewitness told the outlet. "I was outside my shop when I heard a noise and saw the body being dragged under the car. I shouted at the accused but nobody stopped. They were taking U-turns. I called the police and chased the men but they were playing loud music."

Anjali's family believes she was sexually assaulted considering her body was discovered naked, but a post-mortem report concluded that there was "no injury suggestive" of this. According to Delhi police official Sagar Preet Hooda, the provisional cause of death was "shock and hemorrhage due to injury to the head, spine, left femur, and both lower limbs." All five men who were in the car are now in police custody, charged with culpable homicide and causing death by negligence.

Police confirmed that the accused had claimed they borrowed the vehicle from a friend and had fled from the scene in a panic after hitting the victim. They claimed they didn't realize her body was being dragged behind them. The accused also said they couldn't hear her screams over their loud music, but police sources revealed they were drunk.

Authorities are being helped in their investigation by a woman named Nidhi who was reportedly riding pillion on Anjali's scooter and had fled the scene in fear. Speaking to The Print, sources in Delhi Police said Nidhi was intoxicated at the time of the accident, as were the five men in the car that dragged the deceased around. “They have said during interrogation that they didn’t realize her body was stuck under the car and only realized it later when the body was untangled. They then dropped the car back to their friend Ashutosh’s place who had borrowed it from his brother-in-law Lokesh,” Hooda said.

Amit Shah, India's Home Minister, has ordered Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora to launch an inquiry into the police response to the crash. While road accidents are quite common in the country, Anjali's tragic demise has garnered widespread attention particularly due to its gruesome nature and the fact that it took place on a night when Delhi police had deployed 18,000 officers to patrol the city, The Sun reported.
