Angelina Jolie to star in 'The Kept', making revenge thrillers a popular genre for comebacks among leading ladies
Angelina Jolie will be joining the likes of Jennifer Garner and Blake Lively - both of whom made their big Hollywood comeback with revenge thrillers in 2018
Looks like the time for stereotypical male representation in lead roles for revenge thrillers is over. In the last couple of years, more and more leading ladies of Hollywood are adapting to the role of characters with a thirst for vengeance, and joining the league is Angelina Jolie. The 'Maleficent' actress has reportedly been signed to star in 'The Kept' - a period revenge thriller from Imperative Entertainment who picked up the rights to the novel by James Scott.
Writing the film adaptation of the novel will be Alice Birch, who also wrote the Florence Pugh-starring period drama 'Lady Macbeth'. But Jolie is not only on board with playing the part on-screen. She is also set to produce the film alongside Imperative partners Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas. This brings back memories of Jolie's last credits on the movie front - 2017's 'First They Killed My Father' - which she directed.
Since the release of the movie, most of Jolie's appearance and headliners in the news was about her highly publicized divorce from fellow Hollywood A-lister, Brad Pitt. So we guess it won't be all that presumptuous to label this as Jolie's big comeback, apart from her upcoming second installment of the film, 'Maleficent' - which she had been filming in the UK amidst all the divorce drama and custody battle. Her last appearance on screen was 2015’s 'By the Sea,' and she is not set to return any time soon before the release of Maleficent 2, which is due in 2020.
"Set in the winter of 1897 in rural New York, the story (of 'The Kept') is set in motion when a woman returns to her isolated homestead to discover that her husband and four children were murdered," writes The Hollywood Reporter. "The woman is injured by a shot and is tended to by her remaining son, Caleb, who survived by hiding in the pantry. With her 12-year-old by her side, the woman sets out to find those responsible, but the gritty journey in blizzard conditions to a lake town will reveal secrets that will test the bond of mother and son."
Speaking of revenge thrillers, Jolie is the third Hollywood actress in the recent past set to make a comeback of sorts with the genre. Her appearance in 'The Kept' follows that of Jennifer Garner making her stellar comeback with 'Peppermint'.' While the movie failed to gain a lot of rave reviews, it does follow along the lines of a family woman on the hunt to avenge her husband and daughter's death after authorities shield the murderer from punishment.
Similarly, Hollywood's 'it girl' Blake Lively makes her own poignant comeback in the form of the upcoming movie, 'A Simple Favor'. In the film, Lively plays the role of a stunning mother, wife, and best friend, who suddenly goes missing - following which string of thrilling, eerie incidents ensues that could possibly be linked to her closeted dark past, and her present - where her close friend (Anna Kendrick) may or may not be having an affair with her husband.
