A superhero's best friend to his sidekick, here's a list of 5 best pets in comics continuity

Dogs, cats, birds, and even a cow, we take a look at some of the most iconic pets in comics continuity

Faithful companions to the end, even superheroes need someone at their side who they can always come home to. Not all heroes wear capes and not all of them walk on two legs either. We take a look at some of the most iconic pets in superhero history as we offer our two cents to Pet Day that is held on April 11.

1. Krypto

The caped canine from Krypton, Superman's best friend, and the only dog in the world with heat vision. Krypto is a handful, as Superboy is well aware, with every power Superman has including flight, speed, strength, heat vision & X-ray vision, and most importantly, invulnerability. Fiercely protective of his family, Krypto may be a lot to handle, but he has saved the Super-family from a tight spot on more than one occasion.

2. Goose the Cat

Everyone's favorite Flerken, Captain Marvel's alien pet is disguised as an ordinary ginger cat. Known as Chewie in the comics (after Chewbacca), the movie changed the cat's name for copyright reasons but kept the bizarre fact that this average-looking cat contains a surprising number of tentacles and a pocket dimension inside of itself. Captain Marvel may be a powerful figure in her own right, but Goose is definitely her secret weapon.

3. Ace the Bat-Hound

Ace's portrayal changes depending on where he's being written. In the more sillier, or cartoonish Batman adaptations, he joins the Batfamily on their fight against crime fully costumed in a cape and cowl. In more mainstream portrayals, however, he is simply Bruce Wayne's loyal hound, a gift from Alfred to Bruce to teach the latter a little more about caring for others. No matter what version he is though, his nose can sniff out any clues Batman may need help with, and in all worlds, he is a very good boy.

4. Lockjaw

The Inhumans' teleporting dog is a familiar sight in the Marvel Universe, as he loves to roam across the galaxy. One of the few Inhumans who isn't, in fact, human, the Royal Family's pet sports an antennae just like Black Bolt, and has been the transport of many Marvel superheroes from place to place. The founder of the Pet Avengers, Lockjaw is a lot more competent than people give him credit for.

5. Redwing

One of the few superhero pets who never leaves his hero's side, Redwing is as much a sidekick to Falcon as Robin is to Batman - and a lot better at flying, to boot. Falcon's ability to talk to birds means Redwing is the Falcon's eyes and ears - and his talons make him quite dangerous in a battle. The only onscreen appearance of Redwing we've seen is a mechanical construct - which is cute, but hopefully 'The Falcon and the Winter Soldier' gives us a look at a real, flesh-and-feathers sidekick for the Falcon.

Honorary Mention: Bat-Cow

There are too many great pets to mention in comics continuity, but very few of them inspire enough sympathy in a hero to convert them to vegetarianism - especially someone as bloodthirsty as Damian Wayne. Presenting perhaps the most peaceful member of the Batfamily, Bat-Cow.
