DALLAS, TEXAS: 'America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders' is set to premiere on Netflix on June 20, offering viewers an inside look at the world of these iconic cheerleaders.

Since their inception in 1961, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders (DCC) have captivated audiences with their energetic performances and stunning uniforms. This summer, fans will have the opportunity to learn about the dedication and hard work that goes into being a member of this renowned squad in Netflix's upcoming sports series 'America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders'.

With a rich history and a presence in popular culture, the DCC are celebrated for their iconic blue and white uniforms, which have even been featured in exhibits at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.

If you have aspirations of becoming a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader, there are a few key things you should keep in mind before applying for the team. Here are five important factors to consider before pursuing your dream of dancing on the sidelines for representing the Dallas Cowboys team.

1. Minimum age requirement is 18

Fans of the Dallas Cowboys often believe that there are strict rules for DCC auditions, but the truth is that there are very few requirements to participate. The only age requirement is that contestants must be at least 18 years old on the first day of auditions, with no maximum age limit.

Aspirants in their 50s and even a 62-year-old can try out. There are also no restrictions based on gender. Each year, the audition process brings together a diverse group of individuals, from high school seniors to grandmothers, stay-at-home mothers to biomedical engineers.

People come from all over the world, to grab a spot on the cheerleading squad of Dallas Cowboys. The competition to become one of 'America's Sweethearts' draws participants from far and wide.

2. Everyone has to try out

In order to become a member of the Dallas Cowboys cheerleading squad, every individual must undergo a rigorous audition process. This process is mandatory for both amateurs as well as veterans, with the team typically consisting of 36 members.

Even veterans must go through the audition process, and there is no guarantee that they will make the team. Becoming a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader is no easy task, as it requires a high level of cheerleading skill and talent.

During auditions, judges are not only looking for excellent dance technique and attractiveness but also for individuals who can represent the community and the Cowboys brand with professionalism and grace.

3. Written test

During the finals, candidates are required to take a comprehensive written test that plays a crucial role in determining the overall evaluation of their performance.

This test covers a wide range of subjects including the history of the Dallas Cowboys, general football knowledge such as the X’s and O’s of the game, the history of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, dance terminology, current events, and pop culture.

For example, questions may include identifying the all-time leading rusher in NFL history (Emmitt Smith) or recognizing which Cowboys linebacker earned the nickname 'The Wolf Hunter' for his celebratory howling after making big plays (Leighton Vander Esch). In addition to this, contestants may be asked about current events.

4. Panel interview

Through panel interviews, judges interact with candidates and inquire about various topics such as current events or the Cowboys/DCC/NFL. Contestants are unaware of the questions beforehand and must quickly respond to the inquiries.

DCC members serve as ambassadors for the Cowboys' brand during USO Tours, representing the team to a wide range of audiences. Effective communication skills are essential for DCC members as they are representing the community, team, and brand.

Panel interviews play a crucial role in the selection process, as candidates who are able to articulate well and engage with the judges have a higher chance of making the squad.

Conversely, dancers who struggle to communicate effectively may not be selected, regardless of their dancing abilities. Strong performances during panel interviews can significantly boost a contestant's chances of making the DCC squad.

5. DCC Summer Training Camp

Having successfully completed the auditions, you may have taken a significant step towards becoming a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader, but the journey is far from over. Your official status as a DCC is not yet confirmed, as there are still further steps and challenges to overcome before you can claim that title.

Yes, successfully passing auditions means you earn a spot at DCC Summer Training Camp. However, this does not guarantee you a spot on the squad just yet. After making it through Prelims, Semifinals, and Finals, the real challenge begins for DCC hopefuls.

Out of the initial hundreds of contestants, only around 43-46 will advance to Round 3/Finals and receive an invitation to DCC Training Camp. By the end of the summer, only 36 will be chosen to join the squad.

Over the course of three months, rehearsals are held every weeknight at the DCC studio located at the team headquarters. While similar to football players trying out for the Dallas Cowboys, the DCC training camp lasts for 10 weeks, much longer than the players' three-week training camp.
