'America's Got Talent' season 14 finale: Detroit Youth Choir face backlash for singing their audition song 'Can't Hold Us' again

While fans and viewers had their expectations set sky-high for Detroit Youth Choir, they were disappointed after the group performed the same song they sang during their auditions.
UPDATED SEP 18, 2019

The Detroit Youth Choir might have left the judges awestruck with their performance on Tuesday night during 'America's Got Talent' season 14 grand finale, but they sure didn't impress fans.

On Tuesday night, after 16 weeks of tough competition rounds, AGT returned on NBC for day 1 of its grand finale. The ten acts that performed on Tuesday night were Kodi Lee, Tyler Butler-Figueroa, V. Unbeatable, Emanne Beasha, Detroit Youth Choir, Light Balance Kids, Ndlovu Youth Choir, Benicio Bryant, Voices of Service and Ryan Niemiller. Among these ten acts, six of them are Golden Buzzer winners.

Throughout the competition, the Golden Buzzer winners have always stood out, but this week during the finale, there was one act that might have made the cut for the judges, but not for fans, and that is none other than Detroit Youth Choir.

DYC is the first choir to enter the competition. Performing a heartwarming rendition of Macklemore's 'Can't Hold Us', the group was praised by the judges, and also won Terry Crews' Golden Buzzer. Ever since then, the choir has been winning hearts with every performance of theirs. Especially with their semifinal performance of 'High Hopes' by Panic at the Disco.

While fans and viewers had their expectations set sky-high for Detroit Youth Choir, they were left disappointed after the group performed the same song they sang during their auditions. For their finale performance, DYC once again sang Macklemore's 'Can't Hold Us'.

Their finale performance, though we have already heard it, still received positive comments from the judges. "I don’t see a choir, I see a group of individuals who throughout this entire competition have done everything you possibly can with enthusiasm, friendship, talent, personality. You represent your city. You have meant so much to us. This is going to be such a tough competition tonight," Simon Cowell said after their performance.

Though their choreography was different and they had singers emerging from the audience, fans weren't in favor of it and claim they could have performed a better song and not the same one yet again. The only assumption we have currently, as to why they performed the same song again, is maybe they were recreating the emotional moment that led them till the finale. Almost like a throwback to their audition performance. But fans are not happy about it.

Taking to Twitter a fan wrote, "No redo's this is the finals. Also if you are going to do a redo, it should be better than the first one not worse. This was not a winning performance. Makes me sad, I really was behind them." Adding to that another fan said, "Since when is it normal to sing the same song in the finals as you did on the auditions on @AGT ?!?!?! Not impressed by Detroit Youth Choir."

"Can someone please tell me how the Detroit youth choir got a good judgement tonight even though they sang a song they had already sang??? #AGT if they win it's seriously rigged. Like who TF sings the same song twice?" said a fan.

While another added, "Sorry Detroit Youth Choir I refuse to vote for your act. There is nothing amazing or unique about 100 children singing just okay and dancing a little that wasn't even synchronized well. Too easy to hide mistakes. #AGT."

"Couldn't the Detroit Youth Choir come up with a new song? They just lost my vote for repeating their act. #AGT,' said another fan on Twitter.
