'Almost Family' Episode 2 'Related AF' preview: Roxy tries to connect with Leon and Julia with all her new-found cousins
Spoilers ahead for the pilot episode of 'Almost Family'
We have mixed emotions about 'Almost Family'. Fox's latest family drama revolves around a fertility fraud by Timothy Hutton's Leon Bechley. Throughout his award-winning career, Leon Bechley wrongly impregnated several women with his own sperm. For the longest time, this was his own secret. But when this is sprung upon him midway through the pilot by a reporter seeking answers, he becomes a media spectacle.
In the midst of this controversy is nestled (rather disturbingly) Fox's family drama. In episode 2, 'Related AF', it looks like Julia (Brittany Snow) is trying to make the most of the situation. After finding out that she was suddenly related to "half of New York", she first tries running away from it but comes back to embrace it by the end of the pilot.
In episode 2, it looks like she has called a gathering of those she is suddenly related to. "All of us have had our lives disrupted by DNA testing", she is shown addressing a group. Which is weird because it was Julia herself who handed out these DNA test kits last episodes.
Elsewhere, the promo shows Roxy (Emily Osment) trying to reconnect with Leon. "I'm just really stoked to meet you", a very excited Roxy is shown telling him. Last episode, we also saw how keen Roxy was to know more about her sisters Julie and Edie (Megalyn Echikunwoke). It showed just how lonely Roxy feels in the world.
Back home, her relationship with her adopted parents is also strained. It is safe to assume that the couple is selfish and only interested in the money that Roxy makes. After she discovers this last episode, she leaves the house. But in 'Related AF', it looks like she is giving it back to them. "It's like I finally know what it feels like to have an actual dad", she tells her adopted father.
At the same time, Edie's path is growing more and more scandalous. Towards the end of the pilot episode, Edie took cognizance of her sexuality and met with Amanda Doherty (Victoria Cartagena).
But the promo for this episode shows that their association is only escalating. Even as they play opposing forces in court with Edie defending Leon and Doherty prosecuting him, this doesn't seem to have affected their 'situation'. That there is something between them has not escaped her husband Tim (Mo McRae) either, who asks Edie about "the vibe" between her and Doherty.
When Julia finds out, she confronts her. But Edie is quick to get defensive: "It was a one-time thing and it's under control", she tells her.
On the professional front (or personal because both sectors are so unnecessarily seamless in 'Almost Family'), Dr Isaac Abadi (Mustafa Elzein) steps up to the plate at the clinic. Julia is also seen in a conference room persistent that she can't be fired because she is unlike her father.
'Almost Family' airs on Wednesdays at 9 PM ET/PT.
