It has been a while since we saw SM’s leading K-pop groups Girls’ Generation aka SNSD and EXO. Girls’ Generation was at the forefront in the second generation and their labelmate EXO took over at the beginning of the third generation. During their peak, they set the standard and were part of the groups responsible for spreading the Hallyu Wave in the West. Unfortunately, for the past few years, they have been inactive whether for an unknown decision or due to mandatory military service. But we are finally getting a reunion at the SMTOWN Live 2022 Suwon concert.

Girls’ Generation has been on an indefinite hiatus since their 2017 release ‘Holiday Night’ following which several members left SM. They reunited in 2021 by appearing on the variety show ‘Yoo Quiz On The Block’. We are now getting a proper K-pop reunion for their 15th anniversary with the girls dropping their variety show ‘Soshi Tam Tam’ while making a comeback with a full studio album. On the other hand, EXO has been incomplete since its military era began in 2019, with Xiumin and D.O. enlisting. And while we now have six active members since early 2022, there has been only one group concert and variety show.

Girls’ Generation and EXO added to SM family concert

Even for the ensemble concerts from the SMTOWN Lives to KPop.Flex and HallyuPopFest, we only had the likes of EXO's Kai and Chen participating. Well, EXO-Ls can rejoice now as on July 12, SM announced that for their next ensemble concert SMTOWN Live 2022 ‘SMCU Express Hunan City’ in Suwon will have all of Girls’ Generation and almost all active members of EXO. With SM known to blacklist former artists who leave their label, fans were moved that they had allowed members of Girls’ Generation who are not part of SM anymore to join the concert.

Additionally, the lineup for EXO mentions Suho, Xiumin, Chen, D.O., and Kai with Sehun being the only member who will not be able to make it to the concert. Fans hope that Sehun is busy with his solo album or an acting project which is why he has been excluded from the SMTOWN Live 2022 concert.

‘Can’t believe we’re gonna have both SNSD and EXO’

Fans are excited as they made tweets like, “Can’t believe we’re gonna see snsd with all 8 members at sm concert again… i think this is the first time sm make it work for artists who aren’t under them anymore.” Another fan commented, “SNSD (8 MEMBERS) AND KYUNGSOO WAS ADDED TO SMTOWN LIVE SMCU EXPRESS @HUNAN CITY SUWON!! WHAT IS HAPPENING THE WORLD IS FINALLY HEALING????!!!” Some EXO-Ls were disappointed that Sehun was not part of the lineup, “Getting to see chensoo at the smtown concert but no Sehun,” and “Only acceptable reason for sehun not attending smtown concert is him preparing for his solo album.”

Even Knetizens were confused as to why Sehun was not present, “Isn’t Sehun about to enlist? Why is there no group performance by EXO?” However, fans were happy as they were getting five EXO members, “Kim Brothers with Kyungsoo will be together again on one stage. Chen being with them after more than 2years.” Another shared, “I CAN’T BELIEVE WE’RE GONNA HAVE BOTH SNSD AND EXO AS A GROUP ON SMTOWN AFTER SO MANY YEARS.”
