MEAWW previously reported, Mobile police chief Paul Prine reported the details of the horrific scene. He said, "Obviously, multiple shots rang out. I can certainly tell you that. I have one deceased individual and nine other individuals who have been shot by gunfire, who are at the local hospitals being treated." He added, "The perpetrators and at least the deceased may have been known to one another. I think that would give some comfort to all of us downtown that this was not just a random shooting where someone lost their life."
Witnesses described the chilling scene, with people running for cover amid chaos. One of them described how he fled from the scene to save his and his sister's life. Rose Brooks said, "You can't hear between the fireworks and the gunshots everyone starts running I lived in America my entire life I know what's happening, I grab my sister's hand and I run as far as I can as fast as I can."
New Year's Eve reveler Carly Bragg told Fox10 News that the gunshots were alarming and "sounded like super close fireworks." Bragg said, "The timing of it was wild. We walked right past the area, and then it happened." Bragg sheltered herself at the safe flank and said, "Maybe 15 to 20 feet away from the sound and noticed the window shot out of Urban Emporium when we realized how close we were."
