'Air Bud' trends after airing on ESPN, Black Lives Matter supporters say it 'disavowed' George Floyd protests

While one wrote, 'All that is going on in the world right now and #AirBud is trending. Great movie but may I redirect you attention to #BlackLivesMatter,' another asked, 'Why are we talking about Air Bud?”

Although it’s quite disheartening to watch Josh Framm (Kevin Zegers) in the American-Canadian sports comedy movie 'Air Bud' bid goodbye to his pet pooch Buddy, a cross-bred Goldern Retriever, one couldn’t get enough of their misadventures and a human-animal relationship that always gets the viewers emotional.

To lift the spirit of its audience amid all that’s currently taking place in the world and fill the void created by the lack of sports on its platform, ESPN decided to present its viewers with ‘Air Bud’. The 1997 movie aired on the cable network on Friday, June 5 and devoted fans have taken to Twitter to thank the movie for offering them some much needed light-hearted entertainment. Soon ‘Air Bud’ became the talk of the town as it started trending on Twitter, sparking a conversation among its fans from across the globe.

While one fan wrote, “Airbud is airing on ESPN. The movie is the only one that always makes me cry. When the kid has to leave Buddy, throws a stick so he can’t come back in time, and then drive off. It breaks my heart, the dog doesn’t understand, and I always picture my pups. #Airbud Excuse me,” another commented, “#AirBud is currently trending and being show on @espn and I must say that is so sweet, i loved that movie as a kid and that's the reason i named my lab Buddy when i was 12. #rightinthefeels #fondmemories, added another.

However, a few internet users aren’t convinced to learn that ‘Air Bud’ has been overpowering a much serious issue. Several users have tweeted saying one needs to rather focus on Black Lives Matter and the fight against racism at the moment. While one wrote, “All that is going on in the world right now and #AirBud is trending. Great movie but may I redirect you attention to #BlackLivesMatter” another asked, “Why are we talking about Air Bud?”Another Twitter user noted that the trend surrounding ‘Air Bud’ has sidelined the actual issue. “Air Bud just disavowed the protests wow this is huge news,” wrote one.

A few tweets noted that the cable network must have been "desperate" for viewership and hence it aired ‘Air Bud’ in its prime slot as all the sports activities have come to a halt due to coronavirus pandemic. “ESPN is really showing Air Bud right now, these are truly desperate times.” said one.
