As 'Agents of SHIELD' Season 7 takes a lap through the biggest moments in SHIELD history, Episode 4 'Out of the Past' will see the team visit an extremely significant night — the night Daniel Sousa (Enver Gjokaj) became SHIELD's first fallen agent. History books say he was killed by Hydra but the truth may be something quite different. The promo for the episode teases that history may have gotten some things wrong about that incident. And there are hints that the Chronicoms may attempt to mess with the historic moment.

As much as fans would like to see Sousa survive his assassination, his death inspired a lot of great agents including Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg). The synopsis for the episode teases that LMD Coulson is going to try to prevent the Chronicoms from messing up this important point in SHIELD history but the real job might be a lot more tricky than that. In the promo, we see the corpse of a man with his face erased, probably because it was stolen by a Chronicom. If the Chronicoms get to Sousa first, kill him and take his identity, there's no telling what damage they could cause. As a high-ranking agent of SHIELD, Sousa's credentials could give the Chronicoms the access they need to destroy SHIELD from the inside. Worse, if 'Sousa' were to join Hydra, that would shatter the organization's future as we know it.

Of course, there are other possibilities. Fans have been speculating that the team might fake Sousa's death to maintain the timeline and take him with them into the timestream. But whether that becomes a reality or not is anyone's guess. In any case, 'Out of the Past' ought to be a fun episode for the fans with the synopsis teasing that a glitch in Coulson's system after his surprise reboot last episode is going to have some gender-bending consequences. We can only guess what that means.

Here's the synopsis for Episode 4: "It was just another average morning on July 22, 1955, when Agent Phil Coulson realized the importance of that day in the S.H.I.E.L.D. history books. With a chip on his shoulder and a genre-bending glitch in his system, he'd set into motion a chain of events that would hopefully preserve the timeline as we know it and ensure those pesky chronicoms get the ending they deserve. What could go wrong?"

'Agents of SHIELD' Season 7 airs Wednesdays at 10 pm ET on ABC.
