'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' season 6 premiere: Here's a quick refresher of seasons 1 to 5
With 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' season 6 set to premiere Friday on ABC, it's time for a quick refresher before we see what the new season has in store. The show stars Clark Gregg who plays Agent Phil Coulson, Ming Na-Wen as Melinda May, Chloe Benett as Skye, Ian de Caestaker as Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Simmons, Henry Simmons as Mack, Brett Dalton as Ward and finally, Gabriel Luna as the Ghost Rider.
Season 1
Right off the bat, Agent Phil Coulson is alive, contrary to what we saw in 'The Avengers' where he was fatally stabbed by Loki's scepter. The first season shows Coulson assembling a team of highly skilled agents to combat extraordinary and inexplicable threats.
His team includes Melinda May, a former field agent who is now the team's pilot. Grant Ward, a skilled agent and combat fighter, Fitz-Simmons; the engineer-biochemist duo and hacktivist Skye, who Coulson believes is a valuable asset. The team eventually begin investigating the Centipede Project, run by someone referred to as the "Clairvoyant."
One of the missions goes horribly wrong and sees Skye fatally wounded. In a bid to not lose her, Coulson decides to take the project T.A.H.I.T.I. route to revive her, the same place where he was revived, but is unaware of what goes into the procedure. The true purpose of the project was to resurrect any Avenger in case he/she died in battle.
In the last few episodes, it is shown that Ward's commanding officer, Agent Garrett, is the Clairvoyant and Ward is a member of Hydra. The end of the season shows Ward being captured and Coulson is made the new head of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Season 2
Simmons is now working with HYDRA as a double agent. The team sees a new addition in the Lance Hunter, an undercover S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. The new foe alongside HYDRA is shown to be Calvin Zabo, Skye's father.
HYDRA exposes Simmons as the mole, and she evades capture with the help of another double agent, Bobbi Morse. Hydra, in an attempt to draw out the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents stages an attack on the UN and Ward's brother, Senator Christian Ward, tries to locate him. S.H.I.E.L.D. agrees to turn Ward over, who escapes and kills his brother.
The final few episodes of the series go on to show that Skye and Raina (the Clairvoyant's aide) transform after being subjected to a mist-like substance in the Kree City. Skye is shown to have developed an ability to harness seismic energy. There is also some light shed on Ward as he tries to start a new HYDRA.
Season 3
S.H.I.E.L.D. has teamed up with a new organization called ATCU, created to do the same thing that S.H.I.E.L.D. does, while Ward is shown to have recruited Von Strucker (Avengers: Age of Ultron).
HYDRA's origin gets explained in season 3 as well. It is shown that HYDRA was founded so as to bring back a powerful Inhuman from Maveth, the same place where Simmons was found, while the ATCU was also revealed to be assisting HYDRA in the process. The end of the season also shows Ward to be killed by Coulson.
Season 4
Ghost Rider gets to make an appearance in the fourth season. The series also talks about the Life Model Decoys (LMD) and Framework, a simulation created by Leo Fitz as a training program, which was eventually extended into full virtual reality, and a new villain AIDA, a digital assistant designed to be indistinguishable from an ordinary human and to protect the lives of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, until it gets corrupted by HYDRA.
It is revealed that most of the protagonists have LMD's created of them to impersonate the real characters and the only way to stop them is to infiltrate the Framework to destroy the LMD's.
Season 5
The fifth season shows the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. finding themselves in 2091. The storyline leans heavily on the Kree arc and it is revealed that the earth is destroyed by then. The group that transports them at the end of the season is called the True Believers.
It is believed that Skye was responsible for the destruction and the True Believers bring the agents to the future in an attempt to remove them from the timeline and eliminate Skye so as to prevent the destruction. The end battle against HYDRA sees the death of some of the key characters. Coulson dies from his Ghost Rider after effects. Mack becomes the new director of S.H.I.E.L.D.
There! All caught up. Now, go enjoy the new season that will premiere on ABC May 10.
