After seven long years, Disney CEO confirms sequel to 2016's 'Zootopia' is finally in the works

There is no confirmation about the date of release or if any of the original cast will reprise their roles

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: It has been seven whole years since 'Zootopia' came out in 2016 and fans have been waiting eagerly for a sequel. Here's the good news: Disney CEO, Bob Iger, reportedly revealed that the animated movie was getting a sequel.  

A buddy cop action comedy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and directed by Rich Moore and Byron Howard, 'Zootopia' tells the story of the protagonist, Judy Hopps, a rookie officer in the Zootopia Police Department, who wants to prove her abilities to her senior Chief Bogo and takes a big case for that. She takes help from a con artist, Nick Wilde, to solve it.

'Zootopia' isn't the only movie getting a sequel

This news might come as a total shocker, but 'Zootopia' isn't the only movie that's getting a much needed sequel. Some of the all-time favourites are in the list. Iger revealed that 'Frozen' and 'Toy Story' sequels were also in the works. “Today I’m so pleased to announce that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios to some of our most popular franchises, Toy story, Frozen and Zootopia. We’ll have more to share about these productions soon. But this is a great example of how we’re leaning into our unrivaled brands and franchises,” Iger said, per Collider.

Audiences fell in love with the story of 'Zootopia', that raked in $1B at the box office. The star cast includes Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Jenny Slate, JK Simmons, Octavia Spencer, Alan Tudyk, Idris Elba, Shakira, Bonnie Hunt, Nate Torrence, Don Lake and Tommy Chong. There is no confirmation if any of the original cast will reprise their roles.

Disney to release 'Zootopia+' shorts

While fans can celebrate a sequel to 'Zootopia', let's not forgot about the series 'Zootopia+' released in 2022. The series had just three characters, the Sloths, the Tiger dancers and the mobster Shrews from the original movie. The date of release or any other information is yet to be released. It woul really be fun to see where the story goes, now that Judy and Nick are both cops.
