‘Modern Family’ Season 11: Sarah Hyland's character Haley Dunphy didn't get enough justice in pregnancy arc
The decade-old sitcom ‘Modern Family’ Season 11 is only a week away from bidding goodbye to television after entertaining us for over eleven years with enthralling plotlines and of course, presenting to us unusual kinships through the lives of our beloved characters.
As the countdown has begun, fans are eagerly waiting to watch what sort of conclusion would be delivered to each of the characters. While there seems to be a lot in store for the viewers from Mitchell Pritchett (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Cameron Tucker’s (Eric Stonestreet) end as they are embarking on a new journey by adopting a baby boy, the season finale doesn’t seem to promise anything much for Haley Dunphy (Sarah Hyland), whose story arc's pretty much come to a standstill after she got pregnant with twins.
For some reason, the concept of teenage pregnancy didn’t come across as too modern, despite Haley receiving the support of her entire family. For a character like that of Haley, so jaunty and full of life, showing development in terms of a career or passion towards fashion as she always wished would have done more justice to her role.
Maybe it could have still been looked at as development had Haley been portrayed to be an independent individual who could play the role of a mother well. Instead, she was only shown to grow more dependent on her parents while she continued to live with the father of her children in the basement of their house.
In a recent interview with Cosmopolitan, reflecting on her journey in the series and commenting on Haley’s story arc, Hyland said, “There are so many amazing mothers who are also hard workers and excel at their jobs and kill it every day in both aspects. That would have been a really cool thing to see, especially from someone like Haley.”
Meanwhile, even fans feel her character could have evolved in a better manner.
“I wouldn’t have minded the pregnancy storyline if she was with Arvin and the whole Dylan thing didn’t happen. I hate she went back to him, now they want to give them a kid when they can’t even support themselves. I hate that they’re going that direction with her, she deserves a better ending than this”, noted a fan on Reddit.
'Modern Family' Season 11 finale airs on April 8 on ABC.
