Spoiler alert for Season 2 of 'A Million Little Things'

When Jason Ritter got on board for Season 2 of ABC's 'A Million Little Things', his character, Eric, wreaked havoc in the relationship of Gary Mendez (James Roday) and Maggie Bloom (Allison Miller). Eric, a man who was supposedly carrying the heart of Maggie's dead brother, Chad, immediately entered the bad books of Gary, who found him suspicious from the get-go.

For the entirety of Season 2, viewers were left wondering what Eric's character is really up to since the makers kept dropping a hint or two.

But what attracted Jason to the role was the fact that Eric's character was a "beautiful, painful and challenging arc", a role that he simply couldn't put down.

Speaking to MEA WorldWide (MEAWW) at the red carpet for the screening and conversation for the series at The Paley Centre for Media, Jason said he knew his entire character arc, but admitted that he had to lie about where the character was heading. "I knew that I was lying and then there were little moments of inner shame," he said.

Yet he agrees that what Eric did was wrong. "It was awful what Eric did, the pain that he caused to these people's lives even though he initially had good intentions. But you can't really justify something because you've meant it (differently). It's certainly bad to lie about organ donation," Jason told MEAWW.

Jason and Allison have known each other for a while now. They worked together on a couple of projects, including one where Jason played the role of an immensely bad boyfriend to Allison. "We met through a mutual friend Jeremy Connor and then we did a movie together called 'There's Always Woodstock' a long time ago, where I played a real horrible boyfriend that she leaves at the beginning of the movie and starts her journey," he recalled.

He added that the fact that Jason also knew James Roday, who plays Gary Mendez, made 'A Million Little Things' a project hard to deny.

And will Eric be returning to the show now that he has left the city? "It's a possibility," said Jason. "DJ [Nash, the creator] and I have talked about some Season 3 ideas and it's very exciting." But without an official confirmation yet, the ball in ABC's court.

'A Million Little Things' airs on Thursdays at 10/ 9c on ABC.
