Major spoilers for Season 2 Episode 9 of 'A Million Little Things' titled 'Time Stands Still'

It is safe to say that the mid-season fall finale episode of Season 2 of 'A Million Little Things' was perhaps their best so far. A seemingly scattered mess throughout this season now seems to have suddenly cleaned itself out. Well, not entirely but it is definitely getting there.

By the end of Episode 9 'Time Stands Still', the PJ (Chandler Riggs) parentage issue is no longer a problem with the truth finally out.

The DNA sample from the sweater had shown a match with PJ's sample, which brought him to the conclusion that since he picked the sweater from Jon's (Ron Livingston) house, it would have his material.

Unknown to him, however, his mother Barbara (Drea de Matteo) informs him that the sweater indeed belongs to his real father Dave, after whose death Jon kept it close.

At the same time, Eddie (David Giuntoli) approaches Gary (James Roday) for help and to speak with Delilah about Charlie's custody. Katherine and Eddie had repeatedly tried to convey their message to Delilah, who only pushed them away further.

Desperate and insecure, the couple reaches out for legal help and are informed that it is ideal to have an out of court settlement. Caught in the midst of all this is our sweet old Gary.

In the last episode, after Rome's (Romany Malco) mother's funeral, it was revealed that Gary had lost his job. He tells Regina (Christina Moses) that he doesn't wish to tell this to Maggie (Allison Miller) because there is a potential Oxford fellowship on the charts.

Even as he is breaking apart on the inside at the thought of Maggie leaving for Oxford, he doesn't show it to her and puts up a front.

Earlier in the episode, Maggie is looking for her passport and she finds an engagement ring. In the night, she confronts Gary about the ring, who tells her that it was from a long time ago when Maggie was at death's doorstep.

He assures her that he doesn't have any plans of proposing. Maggie is visibly relieved with this information — she points out that they've not known each other for longer than a year and it would be crazy to commit. She is a tad bit too relieved which gets Gary upset.

He asks her what she meant when she laid on that hospital bed and said she'd want to spend the rest of her life with him. She says she doesn't know. It is a really sad scene as Gary is hit by the realization that somewhere, Maggie's love for him was bound by the limited time she had left.

That only makes it worse. After spending the entire season divided, Gary and Maggie now find themselves farther away from each other than ever before.

After this tense conversation, Gary asks Maggie to leave his house. Towards the end of the episode, Gary picks a lady from the bar — the way he used to before meeting Maggie.

Going forward, it is difficult to say where Gary and Maggie are headed since Maggie is not going anywhere as her Oxford plan is no longer on the table.

Will Gary and Maggie reunite? It looks like Gary will be going back to his old days of one night stands and women long forgotten. As for Maggie, she moved into her old apartment, with the help of Eric (Jason Ritter).

Eric gets a suspicious call during the moving process that implied that he is hiding something from Maggie that a certain "buddy" is pushing him to come clean with.

And while we were momentarily intrigued by this little detail, the bigger concern is Maggie and Gary getting back together — if at all. 'A Million Little Things' airs on Thursdays at 9|8c on ABC.
