During the tell-all episode of '90 Day Fiancé: Before The 90 Days' Avery highlighted the difficulties in her relationship as it was impossible for Omar to move to the US because he was from Syria. Ever since the show aired, people who have known Avery have raised their concerns about her decision to convert to Islam.

Avery's friends seemed hesitant about her decision and thought she was being impulsive while her mother worried that she wasn't thinking about the consequences ahead of her if she decided to convert to Islam. Despite this, Avery was sure about her decision and did not give it a second thought. However, Avery recently took to Instagram to open about how she has been a victim of racism and backlash ever since she converted to Islam.

To anyone that doesn't believe racism and bigotry aren't alive, just look at my comment section," Avery wrote in her Instagram post, as shared by blogger John Yates. "I have got death threats from Americans for the simple fact that I am Muslim and the whole country is banned from coming here."

Avery sheds light on how there have been various instances where she was targeted for being a Muslim. "I grew up in a very diverse community where I heard white folks addressing black people as criminals and the Muslims and terrorists." She further added, "Just today, when the ISIS leader died I had people tagging me saying I must be so sad that my 'cousin' died". Avery also added that it is important for people to speak up if they face a similar situation.

"People that don't speak up about the problems just because it doesn't affect them are part of the problem," she said. Avery also appreciated the people who dared to stand against the injustice that is often faced by people of the minority community.

"For the people that stand up against the hate in this world, thank you," she said. "And I am not trying to throw shade because I love everyone but it did strike a nerve seeing some stuff."
