A young girl has reportedly begged doctors to “not heal” her after allegedly suffering years of abuse at home. The child, identified only as Yaz, is in Hospital de Las Margaritas, in the state of Puebla in east-central Mexico. She is in serious condition after being severely beaten on August 21. While being admitted, the child told doctors, “I want to die, don't heal me anymore.” She added, “I don't want to go back to my parents so they can keep hitting me.”

The Daily Mail reported that Yaz was taken to the hospital by a neighbor and it was found she suffered internal bleeding, signs of rape, cigarette burns, and a collapsed lung. Her parents, identified as Alejandra N and Rafael N, were arrested on September 3 and were charged with family violence and child abandonment. Police are also searching for the child’s uncle, who allegedly raped her. Previously also, Yaz was admitted to the hospital after she was found with signs of trauma blows and serious injuries all over her body. She was first admitted in 2019 followed by three other admissions in February, May, and August 2020, but still no action was taken. According to reports, she was rushed to the hospital in August with burns to her buttocks that were so terrible, doctors had to do a graft. Earlier this year, she also came to the hospital with cuts in her legs. At the time, the girl’s father reportedly said that she had harmed herself.

The case of Yaz was brought to the attention of Mayor Claudia Rivera Vivanco by activist Frida Guerrera. Guerrera has demanded the young girl should get on the municipal Development of Family Integrity (DIF) program, which will now take care of her and investigate the case. The DIF has also reopened the case of Yaz’s younger sister, who died under suspicious circumstances in June 2020. Initially, it was said the three-year-old died due to accidental asphyxiation.

The prosecution has claimed that Rafael wanted to have the full custody of their kids, claiming that Alejandra had cut the girls, but his request was refused. But Guerrera believes that the father took the victim with him and also did not let the mother contact her daughter. Initially, the activist said she believed that the mother was responsible for the abuse of the girl, but later her views changed after knowing that it was based on the account of two witnesses, Rafael N, and his present partner. Guerrera also spoke with the special prosecutor and realized that they did not know that the girl’s father had reportedly taken Yaz to live with him in July 2019.

Guerrera has also questioned the Puebla government and accused it of not doing the work properly. “If the Puebla authorities had done their job since January, which was the first moment that there were indications that the girl had suffered sexual violence, the girl would not be in the hospital now, and Mitzi (her little sister) would not be dead. Of course, there is institutional responsibility in this,” she added.
