66 % of Spanish-speaking Telemundo viewers believe Trump won first presidential debate in 'unscientific' poll

Telemundo’s respondents were not a 'scientific sample and may have been organized themselves to skew Telemundo’s results'

The answer to who won the first debate between President Donald Trump and his Democratic challenger Joe Biden lies in the court of public opinion, but Spanish-speaking viewers of Telemundo appear to have thrown their support behind the incumbent.

It's worth noting that both candidates have heavily rallied the Latino community for their vote, with Trump's campaign starting the arguably successful Latinos for Trump initiative. Meanwhile, Biden appeared at a September Hispanic Heritage Month celebration event in Florida. With that said, it seems the Trump campaign's efforts to lure in Latino supporters may be bearing fruits, Newsweek reported. In a poll conducted by Telemundo shortly after the debate, 66 percent of participants told the station they believed Trump won the debate. Biden, on the other hand, only enjoyed 34 percent of poll participants' approval over his performance last night.

That said, the survey results were briefly displayed on-air by the Telemundo network's newsdesk.

However, the score may have little or no practical meaning considering Telemundo’s respondents were not a "scientific sample and may have been organized themselves to skew Telemundo’s results," Breitbart reported.

For instance, in 2016, “Hillary Clinton was deemed the winner of Monday night’s debate by 62% of voters who tuned in to watch, while just 27% said they thought Donald Trump had the better night,” per a CNN/ORC poll among those who watched the debate.

Nonetheless, securing the Latino vote is essential if either candidate wants to guarantee electoral votes of Florida and Arizona, as well as a considerable share of voters in Texas, Georgia, and New Mexico. It's important to note that Latinos have traditionally voted Democratic. Biden was the most popular candidate in a poll conducted by Telemundo, NBC News, and The Wall Street Journal in September with 62 percentage points. Trump held only 26 percent of the vote, per said poll, but his debate performance on Tuesday may sway more Latino voters his way.

Trump has touted his renewed popularity in the Latino voting demographic throughout his 2020 campaign. "We've done really well with Hispanics," Trump said at a July roundtable meeting with leaders from the Latino community. "We like them, they like me, and we've helped them a lot with the jobs. Whether it's jobs, education, or so many other things, it's been really good."

Biden, on the other hand, drew criticism after he played the hit Spanish song "Despacito" from his phone during his appearance at the Hispanic Heritage Month commemoration ceremony. "I'll tell you what," Biden said. "If I had the talent of any one of these people, I'd be elected president by acclamation."

However, several viewers deemed Biden's "Despacito" moment to be "cringeworthy," Newsweek reported.

Latinos for Trump exploited the moment in an ad that featured the former vice president leaning in to kiss younger women on two separate occasions. As reported by the outlet, parts of the English translation of the chart-topping Luis Fonsi number were displayed at the bottom of the footage in poetic humor. "Want to slowly breathe on your neck/Let me whisper in your ear," it went.
