“Hundreds of people were in the park at the time of the shooting when someone started shooting into the crowd, hitting at least six people,” Humphrey said, according to CNN. “I want to speak directly to whoever the shooter is,” he added. Humphrey further added, "Turn yourself in. The best thing for you to do is to turn yourself in. We know that this will not end well. The best case scenario is for you to turn yourself in and stop this.”
The Old National Bank shooting
This shooting broke out just five miles from where the Old National Bank shooting took place a few days ago. The gunman, Connor Sturgeo, reportedly entered the Old National Bank downtown on Monday, April 10, and shot at least five people. He wounded at least eight others before being killed in an exchange of gunfire with police. The victims of the shooting were identified as Thomas Elliot, 63, James Tutt, 64, Joshua Barrick, 40, Julianna Farmer, 45, and Deana Eckert, 57. Sturgeo reportedly worked for the bank as a summer intern for three years before taking a job as a commercial development professional in 2021. Last year, he was hired as a full-time associate and portfolio banker.
Sturgeon was the 2016 NTSPY winner for Boys Track Athlete of the Year. He also won the Evansville regional title in the 400-meter dash during the 2015-16 track and field season and placed 20th at the state championships. In 2015, he was named a National Merit Scholar. The bank shooting was reportedly the 146th mass shooting in US in 2023, which is more than the number of days passed in the year. It occurred just days after the shooting at a school in Nashville, which is just a three-hour drive from Louisville.
At the time, President Joe Biden blamed Republicans for the failure to crackdown on the gun violence issue in the country. "How many more Americans must die before Republicans in Congress will act to protect our communities?" he asked. Biden added, "It's long past time that we require safe storage of firearms. Require background checks for all gun sales. Eliminate gun manufacturers' immunity from liability. We can and must do these things now."
