'100 Day Dream Home': What is the cost of Florida home? Here's why Adam and Julia Hess went way over budget
When it comes to home makeover shows, a lot of it always boils down to budget. Regardless of just how spectacular the architect or the developer might be, going over-budget is always a no-no. '100 Day Dream Home' is no exception to this rule — Brian and Mika Kleinschmidt plan out each detail meticulously to always ensure that they never go over the budget, all while sticking to their '100 day' rule.
Usually, if clients find something they really like, but are unable to acquire it due to budget or availability constraints, Mika Kleinschmidt goes above and beyond to find them the next best option.
In the latest episode 'From Demo to Dream Home', Julia Hess had a very clear vision of what she wanted, and you can best believe that the Kleinschmidts helped her and husband Adam see that vision through. She made her ideas evident from the very beginning — she wanted her home to be all about clean lines, monotones and minimalism — and now, it was up to the Kleinschmidts to deliver the same.
The total budget for construction was $535,000
Staying in St Petersburg, Florida, in a property that lies on the banks of the canal, one of the main criteria of the Hess' couple was to flood-proof their home. Seeing that Florida is prone to both, floods and hurricanes, it was essential to have the home slightly raised.
Keeping that in mind, the Kleinschmidts decided to raise the property up to 14 feet. This allowed for a lower packing space for the family as the residential area sat above it. The total budget set aside for the home by the Hess' family was $535,000.
The Hess' had already constructed an expensive backyard
Apart from the general criteria placed by the Hess family, there was one other rule that the Kleinschmidts had to stick to in this episode — they had to make sure the family's backyard stayed intact, seeing that Julia Hess had designed and renovated it not too long ago. The backyard, complete with a pool and a dock, cost the family a whopping $125,000.
The couple ended up going way over budget
With the final floor plan in, the Hess family was looking at a 2,500 sq ft home, complete with 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a 3 park garage and two patio spaces. The Kleinschmidt then went ahead and planned out the budget for the same. It cost $500,000 for the entire build and $35,000 to be set aside for landscaping, furnishing and the special project.
But here's where Julia's vision nearly failed her — seeing that she was adamant about having large tiles for the flooring, as opposed to smaller ones. When they did find a size they liked (settling for 60x30), Mika realized that they went way over budget. As opposed to the $8,000 set aside for the tiling, the material itself would cost them $15,000, bumping up their total expenditure to $542,000.
Was it worth it?
While Adam Hess seemed apprehensive, Julia was sold on having exactly that. She did ultimately get her way and the couple had to increase their budget. Taking into the total cost of the house plus the backyard, the Hess house renovations set the family back by a total of $667,000 — but by the looks of it, it was totally worth it.
The former professional basketball player, Adam and his wife Julia had been moving with their two young daughters every year for the past 13 years. But, finally, they settled into their dream neighborhood in Florida and bought a lakefront house that was built in the 1970s. Brian and Mika Kleinschmidt ultimately did tear down the house in order to build a safe one and completed the challenge!
