'Top Gun: Maverick' trailer leaves fans nostalgic as an ageless Tom Cruise teaches a new generation of aviators how to 'dogfight'
The much-awaited trailer for 'Top Gun: Maverick' which is set to release in 2020, was released on Monday, December 16, a day after the official poster was shared by the Instagram and Twitter accounts for the movie.
The two minutes 20 second-long clip starts and ends with the legendary movie's iconic music that takes fans of the original flick right back and makes one nostalgic. "Good morning, aviators. Watch the NEW trailer for #TopGun: Maverick starring @TomCruise - In theatres June 26, 2020," the official Instagram account for the movie captioned the post with the video for the trailer.
From the get-go, it also establishes the fact that Pete “Maverick” Mitchell - that's Cruise's character for anyone who has not seen the 1986 movie - had not changed much in terms of his personality that was used to making up his own set of rules as he went.
The sequel picks up decades after the original blockbuster. Maverick is promoted from a pilot to a captain who has been entrusted with the responsibility of teaching a new generation of aviators how to dominate the skies.
He is described as "one of the finest pilots this program has ever produced" whose "exploits are legendary." A room full of aspiring pilots are told what Maverick "has to teach you, might well mean the difference between life and death."
"Good morning aviators, this is your captain speaking. Today's exercise is dogfighting," says Captain Maverick before taking the youngsters for a spin in the air.
Some of the unforgettable scenes from the original movie such as helmetless-motorcycle riding, shirtless recreational games, and servicemen in-fighting are also retained in the sequel, only this time, with the much younger cast members.
Miles Teller co-stars as Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, a pilot trainee, and the son of Maverick’s late friend, Nick “Goose” Bradshaw. The film also stars Jennifer Connelly, Glen Powell, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, and Val Kilmer, who reprises his role as Iceman.
The poster which dropped on Sunday, showed Maverick leaning against an aircraft and looking out into the distance as two other aircrafts leave huge plumes of smoke overhead.
