After the ostensibly random attack, Watts ran to a neighbouring restaurant with the shears still lodged in her head while calling 911 and FaceTiming her mother, Amy Watts. She was seemingly oblivious that the shears were still lodged in her head. The woman's mother told Fox LA, "I gave my typical 'Hey, what’s up, baby girl?' and the first words out of her mouth were, "Mom, this is serious, I’ve been stabbed."
When the shear broke Watts' skull, medical professionals had to leave a bone fragment in situ since it was so close to a significant blood vessel. Watts received treatment at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. The young woman, who was just fired from a position in tech recruitment, underwent surgery to treat her traumatic brain injury and is now starting the protracted healing process.
She does not have health insurance, thus a GoFundMe has been created to pay for her medical costs. Amy claimed that her daughter consistently donates money to charity causes and that she is typically the one who is "bawling" and "donating left and right."
"And now she’s the recipient. It’s an interesting universal switch," the psychiatric nurse added.
"She’s going to come out of this stronger and with an incredible story."
It's odd that Amy and her daughter don't harbour any resentment toward Kyli's assailant.
“If this were a person with epilepsy that had not taken their medication and had a seizure at the wheel and hit your child crossing the street, would you really be angry, or do you understand that that’s a person with an illness?” Amy explained, adding that her family has had experience with the mentally ill. “That’s what we’re dealing with here. To become numb and callous to it is not the right answer. These things are occurring because of systemic failure in treating mental illness."
A charge of attempted murder as well as two charges of assault with a deadly weapon was brought against Cole, who is reportedly being held on a $3 million bail. He is currently being held at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility, according to documents, and is scheduled to appear in court on October 25.
