Quinta Brunson’s hit ‘Abbott Elementary’ gets promising renewal update after sky-high viewership
'Abbott Elementary' will be back for another school year as ABC has renewed the Emmy-winning comedy series for Season 6 in the 2026-27 TV cycle. The mockumentary sitcom, created by Quinta Brunson, premiered on December 7, 2021, earning critical acclaim, audience support, and a long list of awards. The show is currently airing its fifth season, which began on October 1, 2025, and is set to conclude on April 1. ABC delivered the exciting news about the show's renewal on March 4 by sharing a fun voicemail message from Barbara Howard (Sheryl Lee Ralph) on Instagram, in which she said, "I am too busy celebrating the good news to come to the phone right now. In case you haven’t heard, Abbott Elementary will be back again for season 6 on ABC. I cannot wait to get back to shaping the young minds and hearts of the future."
ABC's flagship comedy 'Abbott Elementary' is the network's first scripted renewal for this season, and its early renewal has been a recurring theme for the last four years. Fans, especially young viewers and families, continue to stay invested in the lives of Janine and her co-workers even after five seasons. Based on seven days of multi-platform viewing, 'Abbott Elementary' is this season's top comedy on television among adults aged 18-49 years and holds a 1.82 rating (equivalent to around 2.48 million people) in the key ad sales demographic, as per The Hollywood Reporter. The series averages over 6 million viewers per episode after a week of cross-platform viewing.
Moreover, Season 5's Valentine’s Day episode, titled 'Candygrams,' was watched by 5.93 million viewers across multiple platforms over seven days. The episode, which aired on February 4, saw Janine (Quinta Brunson) and Gregory (Tyler James Williams) take the next step in their relationship and move in together. The popular series focuses on the lives of the teachers working at Abbott Elementary, an underfunded public school located in West Philadelphia. The show's ensemble cast features Brunson and Williams alongside Janelle James as the tone-deaf principal, Ava Coleman; Ralph as the religious kindergarten teacher, Barbara Howard; Chris Perfetti as the sixth-grade history teacher, Jacob Hill; Lisa Ann Walter as the second-grade teacher, Melissa Schemmenti; and William Stanford Davis as the school's custodian, Mr. Johnson.
Season 6 is sure to bring back the main cast and feature new guest stars who will add more fun and drama to the school's already chaotic environment. More importantly, the next season will also see the show breeze past the momentous 100-episode mark. Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker executive produce the ABC series for Delicious Non-Sequitur Productions. Fans can watch the remaining episodes of 'Abbott Elementary' Season 5 on Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. only on ABC. All episodes of the hit series are also available to stream on Hulu.
