‘The Wrecking Crew’ sequel teases Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista’s next chaotic mission and we're here for it
Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista might come across as unlikely partners for a buddy comedy-infused action film at first glance. However, the counterintuitive casting choice does seem to be working splendidly for 'The Wrecking Crew', the recently released R-rated film on Amazon Prime Video. As the film steadily climbs the ladder of streaming success, with an 86% certified fresh rating to boot, talk of a potential sequel has already started making the rounds.
Jonathan Tropper, of 'Your Friends & Neighbors' fame, has written the screenplay of 'The Wrecking Crew'. In a recent interview with The Direct, he shared the possibility of a sequel movie that might come to pass in the future. Tropper was wise to add that since the Prime Video movie brings both Momoa and Bautista together in a moment of camaraderie, a potential sequel would need to feature a 'much more difficult situation.'
Tropper explained, "I've talked about it with Jason (Momoa) a little bit, and I would have talked about it with Dave (Bautista), except Dave is so busy making two other movies right now. But yeah, I think we have a pretty strong idea ... These brothers are now united in a way they weren't before and so I think if we did another one, it would be basically to up the ante, up the stakes, and put them in a much more difficult situation than they were in the first one ... and watch sort of whatever relationship they've built between the first and the second one start to unravel, because they're thrown into the trenches again together."
The scribe further added, "But you know, we have some ideas about where it goes. We just have to wait and see if Amazon wants another one." Obviously, expectations for a sequel would be contingent on the film's reviews, and Prime Video would take stock of the situation before greenlighting a franchise. However, a ScreenRant report indicated that the conclusion of 'The Wrecking Crew' leaves the door open for the development of a franchise in which equally popular stars can be introduced.
The plot of 'The Wrecking Crew' follows Momoa and Bautista, estranged brothers. Momoa's character is sort of a loose cannon police officer, while the one played by Bautista is a meticulous Navy SEAL. The two unlikely heroes are reunited after several years following the death of their father under mysterious circumstances in Hawaii. As they pledge to investigate and unearth the truth, they are continuously pursued by a deadly Yakuza clan. Although the premise and ending of the movie might not come across as novel or high-concept, it is the back-and-forth between the leading duo that gives the movie its heart and soul. 'The Wrecking Crew' is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
