Will there be an 'Anaconda' sequel? Post-credits scene sets up intriguing instalment
Tom Gormican's 'Anaconda' starring Paul Rudd and Jack Black just might have hinted at a potential sequel. The latest creature feature is regarded as a more meta take. The reboot follows Doug (Black) and Griff (Rudd) in a quest to realize their dream of remaking their all-time favorite film, 'Anaconda'. They make the necessary arrangements and eventually encounter a giant anaconda that puts a spanner in the works.
The movie sees a movie-within-a-movie scenario when they realize Sony is working on a reboot with the original cast. There are fun cameos with Ice Cube and Jennifer Lopez in the mix, but chaos follows soon enough. In the end credits, Lopez shows up at Doug's house and asks him to direct another 'Anaconda' reboot for Sony. At the time of writing, there is no official word on a potential sequel, but the film does set up what could be another unique take featuring the deadly creature.
Earlier, Gormican revealed the reason behind his reboot. "I'm a huge fan of the original," he told Polygon. "The challenge was to find a way in that felt kind of clever or different and wasn't like a traditional remake or reboot. We make fun of the idea of reboots."
"It's not a broader statement," he added. "I love those movies. I just felt like there was no room for fun anymore. You can have a movie that feels like a big ride where people can jump on and have a great time on this adventure, but also be clever and different and not have to be sitting there saying, ‘Here's our themes.’ So we had our characters talk about it in the middle of the movie. But there's no larger statement. There’s room for all."
Speaking to THR, he also spoke of the mid-credits scene featuring Lopez. "We tried to get it as part of principal photography, but we couldn’t make schedules coordinate," he said. "We had always wanted a version of her to come in, and we talked about it and talked about it and talked about it. I was finally able to shoot her cameo a month ago, on November 17. It was the very last thing we did. I was finishing up my final mix when I went to shoot it, and I dropped it into this [mid-credit] sequence that I was having built to accommodate it."
'Anaconda' is running in theatres.
