Hugh Jackman drops cryptic response on reprising Wolverine role: ‘I’m never…’
Hugh Jackman has a rather cryptic take on reprising his role as Logan/Wolverine. His latest comes when he was asked about returning to play the iconic X-Men character on 'The Graham Norton Show'. The Aussie actor last played the role in 2024's 'Deadpool and Wolverine' alongside Ryan Reynolds, who suited up to play Wade Wilson/Deadpool.
"Every time you’re on [talk show], you gotta go, 'Nope, I’m not doing that again.' But then you keep making another one. And it’s a big, big hit. So are you gonna have to do it again?" Jackman said. "Maybe. I am never saying ‘never’ ever again… But I did mean it when I said ‘never’ [the first time], until the day when I changed my mind. But I really did for quite a few years, I meant it."
Earlier, he had announced he was done playing Wolverine following 'Logan' in 2017, which ended with the death of the superhero. But in what was a surprise return, he returned as Wolverine seven years later. Speaking during the press tour for 'Deadpool and Wolverine', he revealed his feelings were torn between returning or turning down the role after watching the first 'Deadpool' movie.
"I was like, 'Those two characters together.' I knew it. I knew the fans wanted it ever since I put on the claws; people talked about these two. So, that had always been there, but I just knew," he told Fandango. "I rang Ryan [Reynolds]. And I just said, 'Let’s do it.' Like, I hadn’t rung my agent, no one. I had to ring my agent and said, 'Oh, by the way, I have just committed to a movie.'" But not everyone was initially sold on the idea of Jackman coming back as Wolverine.
Previously, Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige told Empire that he had warned Jackman against returning as Wolverine again. "I said, ‘Let me give you a piece of advice, Hugh. Don’t come back," Feige said. "You had the greatest ending in history with ‘Logan.’ That’s not something we should undo."
He returned, however, but not as Logan. The concept of the multiverse allowed him to come back as a new variant of the character. At the time of writing, it is still unclear whether Jackman will return in the upcoming 'Avengers: Doomsday' or its sequel, 'Avengers: Secret Wars.' With some of the original cast members from the 'X-Men' movies expected to appear, it remains to be seen if the MCU decides to rope in Jackman's Logan.
