NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: A New York City doctor, Krystal Cascetta, 40, committed suicide after shooting her infant at their Westchester home on the morning of Saturday, August 5. It is said that Cascetta, who specialized in oncology and hematology, died from self-inflicted gun wounds, as per the New York Post.

The doctor resided in the town of Somers in NYC with her baby and her husband, according to The Mirror. "The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) Somers are investigating a murder/suicide in the town of Somers," said the state police department in a statement, adding, "A preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 7 am, Krystal Cascetta entered her child’s room and shot her baby and then turned the gun on herself." The infant's age and sex remain undisclosed.

Who was Krystal Cascetta?

Cascetta was a renowned oncologist who was attached to the Mount Sinai Hospital of NYC. She also worked as an assistant professor of medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology. As per her profile on the hospital website, "Dr Cascetta is board-certified in internal medicine, hematology, and medical oncology." Her biography reads, "She received her medical degree from Albany Medical College, where she was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society for demonstrating excellence in humanistic clinical care, leadership, compassion, and dedication to service. As a resident, she received the Intern of the Year award, Humanism in Medicine award and the Daniel Ross Gold, DO Resident Teacher of the Year award."

The doctor did her residency at the Hofstra North Shore Long Island Jewish School of Medicine at North Shore University Hospital and also completed the Greater New York Hospital Association/United Hospital Fund Clinical Quality Fellowship in 2020. Moreover, Cascetta was the 2022 Executive Master of Health Administration candidate at the Sloan Program in Health Administration at Cornell University. She specialized in breast cancer clinical trials, gynecologic cancer, sarcoma, and gastrointestinal cancers at Mt Sinai. 

On the night of the incident, the hospital released a statement regarding the deceased doctor, writing, "The Mount Sinai community is greatly saddened by the tragic loss of a Mount Sinai Health System doctor and her child. We extend our deepest sympathies to Dr. Cascetta's family, friends, colleagues, and patients," as per ABC 7.

Krystal Cascetta was on the advisory board of her husband's nutrition bar company

Cascetta was married to Tim Talty, the founder of the 'Talty Bars', and was one of the members of the company's advisory board. Talty Bar's website details Cascetta’s journey of becoming a doctor, writing, "The people closest to Krystal will tell you that being a doctor is in her DNA. Krystal, herself, will tell you that she has wanted to be a doctor for as long as she can remember; that even as a child she could be found wrapping her dolls in gauze." "When Krystal was in 8th grade, her mother’s best friend passed away from breast cancer. It was this life-altering event that helped Krystal decide that Medical Oncology would be her specialty," added the website, along with, "Krystal is an avid runner and fitness enthusiast, who understands the need to be fueled by clean and tasty ingredients. We are honored to have such an exceptional woman as part of the Talty Bar family."
