CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: An Ohio State football player's mother reportedly lost her life in a drive-by shooting on Sunday, July 16. It has been said that Ashley Griggs, also known as Ashley Turner, was fatally struck in Chicago's Garfield Park neighborhood at nearly two in the morning. The 40-year-old woman was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, but she could not survive and succumbed to her injuries.

The Daily Mail reported that, in addition to Griggs, four other people, including a 38-year-old woman and three men, were injured in the shooting. However, they are expected to survive. The accused, who has not been identified yet, was reportedly "traveling in a vehicle" when they carried out their malicious plan.

Who was Ashley Griggs?

Reports have stated that Griggs was the mother of Carnell Tate, who enrolled at Ohio State at the beginning of this year and took part in spring drills. According to Ohio State Buckeyes football, Tate "was rated as the No. 25 player nationally, with a composite ranking of No. 62 overall and No. 10 at wide receiver by 247Sports."

Following his mother’s death, a statement was released by Ohio State University that said, “We can confirm this was Carnell's mother. Our coach and coaches are aware of this terrible tragedy, incredibly saddened, and they, along with our players, will support Carnell in any way they can during this most difficult time.”

A statement was also issued by Griggs’ mother, Angelina, which reportedly read, “On behalf of our entire family we will not be commenting at this time. There is an active and ongoing investigation into Ashley’s murder, and until that investigation is concluded, we will not be commenting. Thank you.”
